Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Have 1982 Sony SL-T7ME Colour 3 System Betamax Tape Recorder. Machine was in Standby mode, switched machine on and electrical "pop" sounded from LH side facing machine and "on" light failed to light and m/c would not open or operate. Digital clock display still working. I removed top cover and accessed the aluminium box, (after unplugging horizontal pcb mounted on top of ali box cover containing the fuses, and clock diplay pcb,s) approx 6" x 3" which has the heat-sink approx 3"x 3" at rear of box and 2 pcb's mounted vertically inside box. Checked for visual signs of electrical burnout and found 2 350v 4.7uF capacitors suspect(burn marks under capacitors pins on pcb) on primary side of pcb. Replaced with new ones and reassembled m/c, checked fuses on top, okay! Switched m/c on but still no signs of life - digital display still working. I need to have circuit diagram and some sort of diognostic info to pinpoint fault. I am nearly 100% sure fault is on primary side, probably one of the other components inside heat sink box. Output from 240v transformer behind diplay was approx 28v and still working.

What should be the machines operating voltage? ie the secondary winding output of transformer.

  • ted5540 Aug 12, 2009

I have had another look inside "metal box" housing the large heat sink, checked out input voltage into primary side of vertical PCB # SR-09-1as 220v a/c.(PCB# SR-09-02 is other vertical one)
A/C is rectified and +'ve side passes though a ceramic resistor (marked as R101 on PCB) in series with 400v 100uF capacitor (marked C108).
Resistor has blown (open circuit) so need to know its value!!!
This is the problem and why m/c will not power-up.
Some writing on it appears to be (31 3 30K) if this helps you to identify it.
Does anyone know this resistors value??????

A probable source of error are the three relays on the AV-1 board. These are the relays RY401 (12V 1x UM), RY402 and RY403 (12V 2x UM). They are commercial relays. They are partially covered. Do not long trying to figure out what is broken, just renew them all.

I would like to program a Universal remote control for my Sony Betamax -SL-100. Do you have the code to be able to do this?

Sony remote control have no set-up codes to betamax. If you wish to get more; check the sites linked here. It has set-up code list & set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. One among it has general set-up codes to check with TVs and other devices are given, in the order of the 'device's brand name list' in alphabetical order. Pull up older posts. Search the sites by type in the brand name to your device in its search box at the top right part of the display window. It will help you to find the document easily.

I play a tape in my Sony SL-5200 Betamax VCR. It plays normally for about 5-10 minutes and then the picture starts fluttering which lets out this loud buzz on the Hi-Fi audio track and cuts it out to mono....

It could be some kind of tracking problem. The cause could be dirt on the tape head, or perhaps something worn such as a drive belt etc. Check to see if it gets worse or better with the cassette nearly at the end of the tape or at the start of it. Indicating a tape tension problem, on the reels or drive.

Betamax machines are obsolete so getting hold of the parts is the biggest problem. However your best course of action might be to look at the many websites that have been set up by the enthusiastic people that Betamax attracts. If they can't help you no-one can.

Permanent standby

The machine is in a "fault mode", as you have figured, but it's much more likely that a motor has not completed it's cycle upon power-up. It's also possible that the load carriage is out-of-time, and will need to be set according to manual specs...accordianman

Old Betamax Sony SL2300 Possible Tracking problems

A common problem with this model and others is the tracking pot itself fails. Wiper in pot breaks loose. Test if the tracking control has any effect?? If not, pot is bad.

Other causes are dirty heads and tape path but, the tracking control should always have some effect on PB pic. Bad video head, tape guides loose( tape not tracking on video head correctly), guide pin problem on loading ring, slack brake problem, etc.
