Canon G10: clicking properties on camera movie files gives creation time, but after copying to computer, properties only gives copy time, not original creation time. Where did the original time go?

If you use the camera cable or a card reader to get the photos on your computer, the metadata is there. When you copy the same picture the metadata is lost and is replaced by the new data at the time it was copied.

Get a USB flash card reader, and read directly from the memory card into your PC.

SOURCE: Canon SD870 - Unable to copy AVI files to desktop

You need video editing software to copy .avi files to.
XP and Vista have that onboard.
Either direct the data to it or import the data from the individual program.
If that does not work, then you have a transfer problem between Camera and PC.
Try a card reader, that will prove it.

SOURCE: canon G10, clicking noise when turning camera on

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use iPhoto or any other photo management program.

Cannot see pc MOV or JPG files on flash drive in Canon SX230

Thanks very much for responding to my problem.
It seems Canon will not allow edited pictures or video to transfer from PC to their digital cameras for viewing.
steps to my problem:1. my canon SX230 created all the parts for my WMV video in MOV format originally.
2. created a movie (WMV format) in Windows Live Movie Maker. Works well and plays on my PC (windows 7).
3. after WMV completed - converted to HD MOV format in 2 different file convert programs and with 2 different HD MOV resolution settings on Both programs. WMV resolution is 1920x1080 (HD). ALL 4 MOV videos play well on my PC in 2 different programs.

Steps getting Canon to see video in playback mode.1. copy MOV video from PC to Flash drive in my card reader in same folder as my original JPG & MOV files, then inserted into camera - does not recognize file.
2. copy MOV file from PC to camera with USB cable. Windows error message. Wrong format - would not copy.
3. Formatted flash drive in camera. Took picture to create DCIM folder, JPG image, and CANONMSC folder with M0104.CTG file .Deleted CANONMSC folder. Copied my MOV video from PC to camera (USB cable). this time copy successful. However camera does nor recognize file.
5. tried again except deleted M0104.CTG file but not the CANONMSC folder. no luck.
It seems Canon will not recognize any file that has not originated in the camera AND has not been altered. Upon researching answers on the NET - many other users of Canon cameras have the same problem with no luck.

When I download images the date created is the date downloaded rather than the date taken.

The date created is just the date that the file was copied to your computer. If you look at the photo properties (stored in the "exif data" on the image file), you will see the shot date. You can also see this if you right click on the file icon and look at properties. It is usually displayed under the details tab in the section titled "Origin". The file data is stored by the computer and filesystem, but the shot date is actually a part of the file itself.

I wish to copy a DVD with .DAT file or other video

First to make it clean, you are not allowed to make copies of the original DVDs. They are under Copyright law.

You may make a copy of original DVD for home/backup purpose.

Put your DVD in your drive.

If some movie playing software opens, than close it !
Plug your USB device and open it.
Create a folder with the name of movie, and open it !

Open My computer, right click on your DVD Rom device, and click Open.

You will see contents of the DVD. Press CTRL+A click and drag it to the new folder on your USB !

Later you can watch the movie from the USB.

If you want to copy a disc to antoher you need some software like Nero and you should choose a DVD Copy.

Please note that you will need a Disc with tjhe same size as the original (4.7 or 8.4 GB) and also, note that some DVD movies are protected and can not be copied, or that you might not be able to watch a copy of it.

Regards.

My Book 1Tb will not let me copy movies on to it.

To transfer files larger than 4GB to the drive, the harddrive must have an NTFS File system. Unfortunately, the FAT32 File system is not capable of handling a single file larger than 4GB (to be exact, one byte less than 4GB). Follow the steps below to format the harddrive with an NTFS File system:
Warning, all data on the harddrive will be lost! Please backup the data on the harddrive before proceeding.
  1. Locate My Computer (Computer in Vista). Right-click on the harddrive and select Format.
  2. Select NTFS from the File system drop-down list.
  3. Select Quick Format as the Format option and click Start.
  4. Note: If NTFS is not an available option, close the Format window and follow steps 4-9.
  5. Right-click My Computer (Computer in Vista) and select Properties.
  6. Select the Hardware tab and click Device Manager.
  7. Expand Disk drives and right-click on the harddrive. Select Properties.
  8. Click on the Policies tab and select "Optimize for performance.”
  9. Click OK.
  10. Repeat steps 1-3.

How do i play my dvd on a vista platform

I have the gx5020a camera, and found out that the VRO file is just MPEG2. So copy the VRO file onto your computer from your disc. Once its on your harddrive, you can right click on it and go to properties. Re-name your file from VRO to MPG, making sure that you still have the original VRO file in case you need it for other programs. Once I change it to MPG file name, I can use media player to play it and I have a DVD movie maker where i can edit and record to DVD.
