Sorry-nope that didn't work.  Is there someone who fixes these, and is it worth it?

Rino 120: Not used for 12 months, never damaged or impacted, fresh batteries, installed, unit functions perfectly, contrast is perfect, then 2-3 minutes later, unit freezes and screen blanks out with just a single horizontal line 1/4" from bottom. battery removal required to regain any control or functionality.

    will try the solution

Having the same problem with unit locking up and showing line across screen after just a few minutes of normal functioning.  Even with power adaptor hooked up it does this so power loss is not the problem.
Garmin wants $130 flat fee to repair that is way too high when new Rino 120's are under $200 now.

Same problem for both Rino 120 and Rino 110: a couple minutes of good performance for both GPS and FRS/GMRS, then dead unit with single horizontal line.

    Tried the following:

    fresh batteries and confirmed electrical contact;

    fresh batteries plus connection to Garmin 12Vdc adapter;

    no batteries, Garmin 12Vdc adapter.

When the Rino finally (mysteriously) reawakens after power downs through disconnection and/or battery removal, there is no problem for several days.

Same problem with the GPS shutting down for no reason and a line across the screen. Tried everything everyone has offered except the WAAS disable. I to hope Garmin reads this and gets it fixed.

when I turn on my rino 120 a dark line runs horizontal across the screen. Then shortly thereafter dies.

  • elkbound Mar 13, 2009

I have a Rino 120 and when I turn it on, it locks up and shuts off.

With it off, a horizontal line remains about 1/4 inch from the top of the screen. I've read some of the remedies, nothing has worked.

I've liked my garmin up to this point, but if the repair from Garmin is $130.00 and a new one is $200.00, the repair is too costly. I also wonder if the problem has been addressed on newer models.

By reading a number of forums, I've found that there was a WAAS satelitte update (bug), that causes this foul up.
The only solution I've been able to arrive at is DISABLE the WAAS feature, as no Garmin Update/patch (for Rino120) has been made available.
To shutoff the WAAS feature press your [Page] button until you arrive at the "Main Menu"
go down until your on the "Setup"(hammer)
go in (by pressing in, on the directional button)
go down until your on the "System"(gears)
go in (by pressing in, on the directional button)
go down until your on WAAS, go in and select the Disabled
go up to the "X" (top right) press it, then you can [Page] button anywhere you want from there.

Wonder what WAAS is?

Take care.
PS- Garmin if you read this....I would like to have my WAAS back, and since I registered for updates, back in 2005, why didn't I get an email from you telling me about this issue (when it happened and provide a solution - at the same time :: even a work around as I've posted here)

have you put fresh batteries in
are they the right way around
are the 2 metal spring clips tight up against the batteries
try bending them (al little) to make better contact

has the unit had any water in/on it

is the mic button pushed down and draining the batteries too quickly

sounds like a vertical problem, usually you'll see one white line across the screen, but one I worked on would come on and the bottom half of the picture was gone and there were lines across the top of the screen.

If you know how to solder & can find the vertical output chip then you could try resoldering the pins. If this doesn't fix it then it needs new parts.

Screen goes blank except a thin line

There is a firmware upgrade from Garmin that appears to address this problem for units still running Version 3.2 or earlier. If your problem only occurs when WAAS is enabled, you might try upgrading. To find what firmware version you have, from the main menu: Setup, System, then select the (options) icon on the top row, to the left of the 'X'.

Garmin GPS 152

I had the same problem so I replaced my 152 with a spare unit. It did the same thing. This led to believe it was the cable. I removed a few kinks and a bend at the unit; and it seems to be fine. Seems too simple and the bends were not that severe, but it is working (for now).

XB360 Screen colour changes and then disappears

Could possible be your television.

Or maybe your Xbox is overheating.

Try placing your Xbox in a cool spot, direct a fan at it, etc.

Or try getting a new TV or Xbox.

Replacement screen for my garmin rhino 120

Hello joewilly31,

It looks like Garmin offers complete factory overhaul for out of warranty Rhino120 units for $99. For complete details on how to get an RMA number and ship the unit to Garmin for repair go to their website at:

While it may also be possible to purchase parts from Garmin directly, I would recommend against attempting to repair the unit yourself unless you a lot of experience working with and repairing surface mount electronics devices.

Hope this helps.

Insignia 32" Tube TV NS-RTV32

The vertical output IC LA7847 is failing. It will likely fail permanately and you will have just the horizontal line. The set will require service. Just do not run the set very long in this state. That thin white line can likely burn into the crt phospher and will show all the time thus ruining the glass picture tube...
