Is the brush roll not working at all? Check the teeth at the sides of the brush roll by opening up the electric head. If it has completely been destroyed you may have to buy another new head for it. Separate brush rolls are difficult to obtain and work out more expensive sometimes than the electric heads themselves.
You may have to contact the Electrolux cust services in your own country. Check by Electrolux.com

I put a new belt on my vacuum cleaner and it burned off because the brushes won't turn

Hair, dirt and dust can build up underneath the end caps on the brushroll which can damage the bearings if your brush roll has them. If not cleaned occasionally the debris will cause friction which can keep the brushroll from spinning freely which will cause the fast spinning motor shaft to melt the new belt. The old belt was likely loose enough it did not have enough friction to burn the belt. Many people assume they got a faulty belt when this happens but it's usually a problem with the brushroll. The brushroll is very important to getting dirt out of carpets and should be replaced every few years. I suggest a new brush roll and be sure to remove it occasionally to clean it and put on a new belt at least once a year.

How is it possible for the one end of the brush roll to come off and can I buy it instead of the whole roll?

The end that usually "comes off", as you put it, is the belt end of the brushroll. The reason for that is either something got caught up in the end cap, rubbing it till it broke free from the brushroll, or the bearing in the cap got so hot that it melted the plastic end. Either way, the ends are not replaceable alone on these, a new brushroll must be purchased and installed, preferably with a new belt, as well.

The brush is not turning and a red light is on

It could be that the brush motor just needs to be reset. You should find a button near the brushroll cleaner step lever.

The burn smell means you should take it to a qualified Electrolux repair facility. It may be an electrical issue and could catch on fire if not repaired properly.

Hi and welcome to Fixya. I am Kelly.

You have correctly identified the problem as the brush roll itself.

There is a bearing under each end cap of the brush roll. You can gain access to the bearings usually by gripping the browah roll end caps and rotate the caps in opposing but loosening (ccw rt / cw left) directions.

Many times I have found that there is just a mass of hair under the end cap that functions like a brake. Clean it up really well on under BOTH end caps.

Do a spin test by putting the end caps back on (Hold it horizontal) and rotating the brush roll with your thumbs. It should spin freely.

If it feels like there is still friction then your probably going to have to take the brush roll with you down to the nearest vacuum cleaner repair / supply shop and get 2 new bearings. Most shops will install the NEW bearings for you if you have the brush roll in hand. It is a much cheaper fix than the brush roll itself.

(buy a new belt too!)

Take care

Kelly

I have a 15 yr old electrolux genesis upright vacuum cleaner that I can't get the roller out, to replace the belt.

There are two small screws at the end of the brush roll on some of these. There is a bearing block recessed into the housing at a slight angle to help tension the belt, so it comes out at an angle as well. It often fills with grit and you must clean the grit out carefully without damaging the blocks or housing. Sometimes WD 40 helps is the area has any rust build up. Then work a large screwdriver under one end the brush for leverage being CAREFUL not to damage the brush housing. Do not soak with WD40 as it will also get into the brush roll bearings

How do i change the brush and belt

Starting withh the brushroll, slip belt over brushroll. The brushroll will only go on one way.The caps on the ends of the brushroll are different sizes so it will only go on one way.Make sure the adjustment screws face outward toward the floor.Install the brush roll into the bracket.Install the bracket onto brushead, making sure the tabs on the bracket fit onto the tabs in the brushead.Turn brushead around, and latch the two latches on either side. Then turn the belt lifter to pick up the belt, looking thru the back opening.Raise the Kirby to it's highest setting.Re-install the brushead, and lock it down tight, but not too tight. Then, turn the belt lifter knob all the way clockwise to drop the belt onto shaft.
