Question about Gateway FPD1530 15" Flat Panel LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Monitor comes on for a second then goes off. Power light stays on

I have a Gateway FPD1530 when I turn it on it looks like it will work fine, but then goes dark. You can still see the sreen if you look close enough. I thought that the back light might be out at first, but ruled that out. I have thought about replacing the power supply circut, but not sure if it will fix the problem. I have had no luck finding any bad parts to the naked eye. I am now at a loss on what to do.

You say you can still see the screen if you look close enough. The only thing that gives it more light is the backlight. It is either shorting itself out right after it comes on or the device that powers it (usually the inverter) is the culprit.

My gateway fpd1530 comes on then goes right back off any sugjestions on repair or is it worth it?

15? not likely.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed HP monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

FPD1530 comes on then goes off after a second. Found a burnt capacitor, is worth looking for a new cap or junk it?

Well, it is hard to find new 15" LCD monitors these day, new one are so cheap (and cheaply made also), it can be a good learnibg experience for some one who is learning electronics to try to fix it.

There are more than one inverter circuit for this model. One is prone to have poor solder connections in the transistors Q8 & Q10.
Another can be repaired by replacing 2 1uF electrolytic capacitors near the center edge of the board between the lamp sockets.

Gateway monitor fpd1530

There are multiple curcuits for this model.
Quick turn off of the backlight can be caused by deteriorated solder connectiond on Q6 & Q10 on the power supply/inverter board. Resolder and reassemble. (board mfgr: BI Electronics)
