Toshiba Satellite laptop w/ blank, black screen & blinking cursor

I've had a Toshiba Satellite A305 laptop since October. It was working fine and have had not problems with it. I had not used it for a couple of days & when I went to start up - I got the Toshiba screen with the F2 and F12 options (which I can access), then it goes to a blank, black screen with a flashing cursor. I've been unable to get any further with it. How do I fix this?

The hard drive is not checking in correctly. go into your f2 function which is your bios. see if in there during the boot options if you have a hard drive showing up. if you do, you would need to check if the hard drive has failed or the o.s. is corrupt.if you do not see a drive there, its failed, check to see if its seated correctly. if it is seated correctly the drive has failed and will need to be replaced.

if it shows up, and if you have your restore disk, load it and select repair. it will look for the hard drive and any windows installations. if it does not find any. then the drive is bad and will need to be replaced, in the event it does find the windows installation then continue to repair the machine software.

Let me know what happens when you try this

Good Luck!

Hi, I have Toshiba Satellite A305 S6905 model.

It is more on a hardware issue. The battery needs to be drained. Once on, let the battery drain and re charge it for 4 hours.

I have a toshiba satellite a305-s6909 and just replaced the motherboard and when i went to power it on nothing comes up on the display the screen stays black?????

A couple of crazy ideas:

1. Press the Fn key with the (usually) blue icon that looks like two monitors. That's usually Fn/F5.. That could help if the keys were pressed before and the video was redirected to an external monitor.

2. The ribbon cable from the motherboard to the monitor came loose, or wasn't inserted during the replacement.

I restarted my Toshiba satellite a305 and now it won't boot up or go into safe mode. It comes to the start up screen that says press f2 for setup f12 for boot manager. It will let me go into setup and boot...

If it won't let you go to safe mode, then there's something that the BIOS(setup) or Boot Manager needs before starting the operating system(Windows Vista). You should have a Toshiba Recovery Disk which will fix this . The disk will not touch any of your current files and data,so don't worry about that.

When I turn my Toshiba A45-S151 laptop on, I first get the screen that shows the Toshiba logo and has the four icons under the logo. Usually the next screen is black, has a cursor in the top left corner,...

That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS is telling you that Windows is not loading because its most critical, core files have been corrupted beyond repair. The only thing you can do is to reinstall using the recovery cd or your own Windows install disk.

Black screen w/blinking cursor

So.. you can select safe mode? Or you turn it on and it is resuming into the blank screen?

If the latter. Unplug the power, pull the battery out for 20 seconds or so. Then put it all back together and try booting up.
