Question about Dell Inspiron 1420 Notebook

1 Answer

There is no response at all when I try to power up. I was told it is the motherboard however I have only owned the computer for 15 months and it is no longer under warranty.

Check first if you have a green light on your power adapter, If yes your power adapter is good, maybe your output cable of adapter is broken, If not, You power connector on you laptop is broken. If you laptop recieve a charge light , for sure your adapter is ok. In order to verify your motherboards is ok, remove your ram, hdd. Put back the ram and try to power On the laptop, If still no luck, the power mosfet location at the end of motherboard need to replace. Bring your laptop to expert technician.

How many years do you own that desktop computer? You have a problem with your Ram: Transcend: 2GB 1333 Mhz

Ram is always responsible to boot and run all system required by your computer
A defect ram cannot boot or not properly run application e.g.
Power-On-Self-Test (start up of your computer)
Booting your Operating System
Running your Application like Microsoft office , Photoshop and so on

Replace your Ram

it might be that it short circuited. try to remove the battery, unplug the ac adapter2_bing.gif and press and hold the power button for about 15-20 sec to drain power. expect no response since we're just draining the power. then put back in the battery and ac, and try to turn pc on. if still no go, possible motherboard replacement.

I am working on my neighbor's slimline HP right now. His HP was having the same problem and has an extended warranty thru HP. He sent the computer to them and was told the motherboard is bad and not repairable. They actually told him to go buy a new computer! I told him I would take a look at it for him. I could not verify if it was the on-board video because even though the board has a PCI-E slot only a half size graphics card will fit and I do not have one. I need to verify that it is not the power supply but the problem is the board uses a small form ATX connector so I had to order and adapter for $15 and I am waiting for the part. If the power supply turns out to be then I will probably install a new motherboard. The problem is there is no where to get a new motherboard for this model(was made by Asus for HP). There are only used available one's available with no warranty. When I get the part to test the power supply I will post an update to you.

I have a dell inspiron 1520 that is 15 months old doesn't go on

Generally, if the AC adapter for the system's LED goes out when connected to the system, check the battery and see if it is holding a a charge (Press the button next to the LEDs on the battery see if all 5 light up)  If the battery still has power, then most likely there is a failure of the motherboard.
If you can, try another Dell D-series AC adapter and see if the same thing occurs.  If the system powers on, replace the AC adapter, if not it is a motherboard.

Gateway solo mt6840 power input is not working

I had the same exact problem, the computer techs I talked to all said it was either the DC Jack or the Motherboard. They will need to open your computer to check this out and they usually charge to do this. I had the DC Jack replaced and still had the same problem so their next suggestion was to get a new Motherboard which can set you back quite a bit. Try to find a Computer repair shop who will give you an estimate at a minimum to no charge, also ask if they are able to fix the Motherboard without totally replacing it if this is the problem. This will most likely be at half the cost of a new Motherboard. My computer was fixed for a total of $220, that was $150 for a Motherboard repair and about $50 for the DC Jack repair. The only drawback was the company ended up damaging the body of my computer and won't own up to it. Whatever you do, don't send it to Pell Technology and get it done in the near vicinity. Also take pictures of your computer before you leave it with any computer repair shop.

Open the back panels, blow out EVERYTHING and remove and re-insert everything. You could just have dirty contacts somewhere. The dust from the fans also travels around inside the computer.

My computer laptop just shut down and will not turn on

Sounds like the power jack on the motherboard is bad. If you plug the power in and it doesnt show that it is charging (light indicator on the front) then that is probably the issue. Your choices are purchase a new motherboard or do like I did and order a 15$ replacement piece on ebay and resolder it in yourself. Its tricky to do but I managed to get through it.

Hi there is one more thing you should check before buying another mobo. Trace the wires from your on/off switch on the case, unplug it and then bridge the 2 pins out with a screw driver, this will start the computer. runit as normal, then shut down and see if you get a restart. If the computer does not restart on its own you have a faulty switch. Clean it or replace it. Regards mistyman
