GE ice maker, solid ice in ice maker

I have this ice maker, http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/ctrfs.aspx?part_id=4345120&diagram_id=565951&pkw_=ice&&model_id=219576

Ice maker makes ice, but ice is one solid piece w/in above ice maker.

I melted ice w/ worm water and pour water manually, it makes ice pieces and dispense them.

but when it gets water from valve, some how water is fulled up in ice maker tray and makes one solid ice piece.

is there a setting for water level or amount of water in-take for ice maker?

Many ice makers have an adjustment screw behind the front cover that shows plus or minus. Try the minus turn of the screw that should shorten the amount of time the ice maker fills. If electronic please call the company you purchased it from and explain the problem. Sea Breeze

I have a Maytag side by side refrigerator model PSD2450GRW. The ice maker will not make ice but the water comes out front just fine. The freezer works and the ice maker is at the ON position. Thanks for...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. Usually when an ice maker slows or stops ice production it is a symptom of an aitomatic defrosting problem. The freezer must maintain 14 - 16 Deg F for the ice maker to make ice. Any temp above that an ice production stops. If the freezer is in the 14 - 16 deg F temp range then the problem can be the thermostat in the ice maker or the inlet water valve.

Here is simple test you can do at home to see if the inlet water valve is working:
1. Unlpug the unit for at least 10 minutes.
2. Remove the fiber board cover on the back of the unit.
3. Locate the inlet water valve and SWITCH the 2 connectors on the inler water valve.
4. Open the freezer door and hold the light switch button depressed. (or tape it down)
5. Take a glass and attempt to draw water through the door. Do this just long enout to realize water is going into the ice-maker.

^- NOTE the water will actually be going into the icemaker and the water valve is good!

If you have water going into the ice maker when you try water in door then the problem is either an automatic defrosting problem or an ice maker problem.

MAKE SURE TO RESTORE THE INLET WATER VALVE CONNECTORS to their original positons!

The ice maker can be tested using this link:
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

If the icemaker checks out good then the freezer is too warm and there is some reasonthat the freezer is warming up. Usually this is caused one of the following:
1. Defrost control board. Item 13 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=48135&diagram_id=28489467#d28489467

2. The defrost element and thermostat. Item 12 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=48135&diagram_id=28489469#d28489469

The wiring diagram can be found here:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/frame_diagram.aspx?diagram_id=28489477&pkw_=basket&model_id=48135&NewWindow=1

Here is how I would approch troubleshooting on your unit:
1. Check out the icemaker using the american appliance link above.
2. Do a manual defrost by unplugging the unit and placeing a fan blowing into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (Makes a water mess!)
3. Return the unit to normal service for a few days.

If it starts making ice..... you have an automatic defrost problem or... the evaporator fan is not running at full speed.

One last note... anytime you unplug the unit you must wait about 15 minutes for the cooling system to stabilze or the compressor will NOT start.

Kelly

GE Model GSS25JFMWW, started with the ice maker not working, then the water doesn't work half the time. Now the freezer and Fridge both stop working, and out of nowhere the will start again after a couple...

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

The ice-maker not working was a sign that the freezer temps were rising above 14 - 16 deg F. There ice-maker has an internal thermostat that activates the harvest cycle when the temps reach around 15 deg F. If the freezer is warming up it will never make ice.

What is most likely causing the recent symptoms of the unit shutting of and not stating for a long period is either an intermittent defrost thermostat (
The unit has a timed defrost cycle to START the cycle but there is a 60 deg F thermostat that opens to terminate the defrost cycle. If the defrost heater does not work the unit has to slowly warm up toward room temp without heat to reach 60 deg F for the defrost cycle to terminate. This can take a very long time if the freezer is more than 50% full as the contents will keep the temp below 60 deg F for an extended period.

I suspect you have a defrost element failure. Item 230 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=210406&diagram_id=22357329#d22357329

You should read resistance across the defrost heating element. No resistance = open element.

There is the very very remote possibility that there is a problem with the main board. Item 801 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=210406&diagram_id=22357329#d22357329
Since the unit works once defrosted I doubt the main board has failed.

There is a thermistor that is item 241 of this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=210406&diagram_id=22357332#d22357332 that can possibly cause the problem.

Thermistor Image:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/PartImage.aspx?imgid=Z3BqLjBfbXNfNTIwMDFYNTVSVy9IRUcvc290b2hwdHJhcC8%3d

If the defrost heating element is good then this would be suspect #2.

I hate to use someone elses material in a response but this one is so good that it is a must read:
http://www.appliance-repair-it.com/refrigerator-thermistor.html

Bottom line... I still think you have a defrost heating element problem at this time.

Kelly

This could be a tricky problem to analyze and fix, since it seems to be an intermittent problem. On the following website is a list of things that can cause the icemaker to not make ice, and it is where you should start, as far as analyzing and troubleshooting the unit.
Of course, you should make sure your condensor coils are clean, and that the evaporator coils are not icing up.
Here is the site: http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/icemaker/diagicemaker.php
The following site has diagrams and parts lists for your unit:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5170926
In diagram #16, the water filter is part #3. Make sure it's not clogged, and if it is replace it with a good one.
Here is a blog on that website that discusses a similar problem, and may be of help:

Hope this helps, and good luck to you.

Thi over filling ice maker is cause but the ice maker water valve laking water by when it is supposed to be closed. The only remedy for this is to change the water valve. The water valve is item 800 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5131037&diagram_id=22223831#d22223831

close up view:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=3192626

The high pitched wine from the evaporator fan can either be the fan bearing or ice build up. If your not noticing the freezer temps warm up I would suspect the fan bearings. If you notice things like soft ice cream then you may have an automatic defrost problem. To isolate the possibilty of an automatic defrosting problem and post procedure fan test perform the following manual defrosting steps:

1. Unit unplugged
2. Remove freezer contents
3. Place a fan blowing into the freezer compartment for 2 hours
(Messy - rags and mop required)
4. Wipe residual water in freezer compartment
5. Plug in unit
6. Reload freezer contents

Check for fan whine and normal temps in 4 hours.

If the fan is no longer whining you probably have an automatic defrosting problem. If it still whines you can try lubricating the fan motor bearings with "Zoom Spout" oiler (Any Appliance parts source carrys this for under $3.00) Do not use regular oil! It will cause the fan motor to sieze in about 1 month.

Worst case the evaporator fan motor would have to be changed:

Item 610 this link:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5131037&diagram_id=22223826#d22223826

^- Note there are 2 types of fan motor. One with thermistor and one without. Both are listed under item 610.

Replacement plastic parts for the ice maker can be found here: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5131037&diagram_id=22223828#d22223828

Hss25gfta refridgerator ice maker seems to be stuck on off .It all of the sudden quit making ice and we can't find the solution. It makes water fine

Hi and welcome to FixYa I am Kelly.

The ice maker suddenly no longer making ice can be caused by many things.

1. The freezer section is above 16 F.
a. Usually the cause is ice buildup on the evaporator coils as a result of an automatic defrosting problem.
b. The evaporator fan is not turning at full speed

2. The ice makers thermostat has failed. When the tray reaches 16F temp is closes the circuit and starts the ice maker harvest cycle.

3. The ice maker drive motor has failed.

4. The ice maker heating element has failed.

5. The inlet water valve is allowing water to drip into the ice tray during the freeze period of ice making.
a. You would note that the water fill area of the icemaker would have ice build up. Also in the very back of the ice make tray ice would build up and prevent the sweep fingers from rotating.
b. Usually when the above happens the rubber water inlet tub that goes from the back of the unit to the ice maker is frozen solid internally.
c. You can test this by removing the plastic hose from the rear top area of the unit and placing the upper end of the tub in a bucket for several hours. (ICE MAKER OFF) If you note water in the bucket the water valve is leaking water past the diaphram when the solenoid is supposed to be closed and must be replaced
6. The inlet water valve solenoid coil has failed.

Most appliance parts sources do not sell piece parts for this ice maker. They only sell the complete assembly. Here is one source of many on line sources for just the icemaker.

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=4345120

Should the water valve be leaking water by it is item 800 of this link that is also one source of many online sources: http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=5203104&diagram_id=24933031#d24933031

25.2 cu ft side by side whirlpool refrigerator. ice maker is not working. was working fine 2,3 days ago. filled up bin.

When an ice maker stops making ice usually the problem is not the ice maker. More often than not there is ice build up on the evaporator coils due to an automatic defrosting problem.

Other times the fill tube freezes up. Item #2:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=251398&diagram_id=99075#d99075

Expanded view:

http://www.appliancepartspros.com/part_details.aspx?part_id=2992967

Check the plastic tubing on the back of your unit to see that it is still connected to this tube. If the plastic tubing has separated from the fitting the ice maker fitting has frozen solid internally with ice.

You can remove this tub by rotating it about 30 degrees and then pulling it out from the back if the unit. You may have to use a hair drier to defrost the tube.

This link will assist you in determining if there really is an ice maker problem:
http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=12&newsdesk_id=34

It is step by step info on how to cycle the ice maker and test it. The procedure calls for testing (jumpering) a live circuit so be safe.

I think your going to find that you have an automatic defrosting problem that is causing the freezer to warm up to the point that the ice maker thermostat has disabled the ice maker.

The defrost timer is here:
