Question about IBM ThinkPad R51 Notebook

IBM R51 Backlight Problem..

I have opened this computer (R51) case for changing WLAN card. So that one of the antenna has been touched to mainboard and backlight has gone away.
I had some suspects about having inverter damaged. To check that, I have changed complete screen part with the one I have (IBM R52)..Result was the same. After complete screen change Everything was dark. I can see the pictures on the LCD but no back light.
Later on, I have tested complete screen of R51 on my R52 system..So everything was OK. Backlight was there..
I understood that there is no problem with LCD Screen part of the system.
Is there a way to feed inverter from somewhere else..

Kindlym Regards

Actually, I have replaced complete screen with the working one. So Inverter is normally in the LCD Panel Part of the Notebook. I have changed complete LCD Panel with cover and all parts in it.

I think I blowed something on mainboard. External monitor is working perfectly. And this LCD Panel part of the notebook working on my R52.

Is there a way to supply power to the backlight from somewhere else ??..

Check the model/part on the inverter. if you know you have a good one on the second laptop, remove it and try it in the non-working one. if the parts match which most of the time they do, then you are ok, it should only be two wires on the inverter, one coming from mobo, one coming from lcd. if that doesnt work you have blown a capacitor/resistor somewhere down the line. in that case it will have to be serviced and will run you anywhere from 80-130 if you find a place local or on ebay.

Good Luck!

How do you take out T42 IBM broken power jack in order to put in a new one

you need to remove the keyboard then the upper casing... if you have a modem, remove it to get more work room. you should be able to unplug the power connector off the mainboard (the wire between the power jack and the mainboard) and snap the old jack out of place. be careful not to break the board or anything while doing so, though it should not be hard to remove the jack since it is not soldered. best of luck

I have an ibm R51 and the radio is off and it keeps telling me to turn it on to use wireless but never works.

Look for the wireless on/off switch of the wireless adapter. Usually it is located infront of the computer right beside the LED indicators. Make sure that the switch is in ON position. If not infront, look on the side. You can also enable/disable the wireless network card by pressing Fn + F5.

R51 Thinkpad Monitor Problems

To answer your question Morgan, yes you can get a new LCD display for your laptop! Typically people sell the entire assembly which is the screen, backlight, display cable. It then fits into the thin plastic casing around your current screen. They are actually pretty easy to replace the problem is you oftentimes have to remove the computers keyboard, and other pieces of plastic on the top that might be in the way. Also there are usually anchoring screws on the bottom that have to be removed as well. There should be one little teeny tiny cable you have to pull out that connects to the mainboard, and then reconnect with the new display. Try this website if you want to order a new one their price is only $120 (which is great for a new LCD screen).

Disable boot up password in R51

You could open up the R51 and remove the CMOS battery. This would reset the password.

Here is a link I found that allows one to hack the BIOS password:

Or try this fixya thread:

R51 will only start on battery.

Well it sound pretty much like power is not reaching the laptop components so neither the computer turns nor charges the battery using the power adaptor. You mention that you used the power adaptor from other laptop (hopefully same model he he) so it is clear that the fault is not it.

It might be the power "inlet" , I mean the socket where the plug is inserted, it can always get broken.

Another theory is that it might be the power regulation circuit on the mainboard.

In both cases it requieres to send the laptop to be repaired.

A home made "solution" might be to dissassemble your laptop and test the power on the mainboard using a Voltmetter, this requieres some skils so if you decide to try it be cautionous.

Good luck!!
