I have the exact same printer. Struggled for hours with it, until I learned it's ways. If you have good cartridges in and purge your print buffer from your computer, then 'gently but firmly' slam the top cover.
I don't see sensors, etc that detect it being up, but I just closed mine, had ! blinking, etc. Then gently 'slammed' the top cover and it reset and worked great.

If the product uses only a power cord, follow these steps to make sure that power is properly supplied to the product.

Step four: Service the Product
If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product by calling hp at 1800-474-6836
Printer Spool offline:
Disconnect the USB cable, go to RUN and type in services.msc and then find print spool and right click, then choose restart.
