Question about Troy-Bilt 4-Cycle Curve Shaft Gas String Trimmer #41ADT41C966

1 Answer

Acts like it starving for fuel.

My 5 year old troy built 4 cycle has always ran great. I have changed the crankcase oil twice a year since new and adjusted the valves ever spring. It died and would not restart recently. The fuel hose was degraded so I replaced both pieces with new. Now I can only get to start using a small shot of starting fluid. And I must run it full throttle for it to stay running. Acts like its starving for fule, maybe a vacuum leak making it run very lean. Will not idle or run at anything but wide open throttle. I think I will pull the valve cover and check the rocker arms and valve lash for anything that looks out of place. It does not look like they offer a carb kit for the tb475ss model. Any other ideas would be helpfull!

Well thanks to the post about removing the primer bulb then the cast plate behind it that has the fule portat the top. I removed the cast plate and sprayed carb cleaner through the fule inlet port with the included straw. Also there is a fule jet mounted on the plate I cleaned. You can see a small screen made into the plate that should be clear of any material. I feel like pieces of my fuel line migrated up the hose and clogged the screen in the plate. Now Runs like new again. Starts on first pull every time!

Is there something that can be put in the fuel to keep the fuel line from disintegrating?

You can add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel to prevent that from happening. You should always add the stabilizer to new fuel and it can be used in all of your engines, everything from a string trimmer to your car. The ethanol in today's fuel is causing many problems, especially with 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines. You can buy Star Tron fuel stabilizer from PartsBuggy.com. A good size is the 8 oz bottle. It treats 48 gallons of fuel with one bottle.

Gas and oil mixed in 4 cycle backpack leaf blower

If it is a 4 cycle blower, you do not mix oil with the fuel....It takes straight Gas. there is an oil cap to put engine oil in crankcase, this only usually takes 2,3,4 oz. of oil. Sounds like your Spark Plug probably fouled out from having oil mixed in your gas. I would recomend changing your Spark Plug and put some Fresh GAS only in the blower, dump the old stuff out !!! You should be on your way Blowing in No Time !

Recheck the fuel pressure. I have replaced them after one day. Most new ones I replaced inbetween 30 to 60 days. Chinese ****. Even OEM can go bad, but I have replaced more new pumps from autozone than anywhere else. Advance is next.

What kind of oil goes in crankcase

Rule of thumb for lawn and garden equipment ...

If it is 2 cycle - gas and oil are mixed - 50 to 1 mix. Some two cycle engines require more oil ... up to 32 to one.

It if is 4 cycle - has a fuel tank and a crank case - 30 weight oil SJ or better service rating.

If you want to become an expert on oil ... go here: http://www.bsehome.net/pdf/OIL_S_EG.PDF

And a final word ... it is always good to refer to the manufacturer recommendations when selecting lubricants. Troy Bilt (no longer manufactured by the Troy Bilt Company in Troy New York) uses a number of different engines on their procducts. Troy built 27cc string trimmer Model TB21 EC. What is the gas oil mix ratio?

4 cycle engines do not run on mixed fuel. Run on straight fuel. They have a spot to put oil in just like a lawn mover, and should be changed regularly. @ stroke engines run on mixed fuel.

The fuel filter is only about 5 bucks worth of work/material. Most of the time you have to get 3/8 fuel line and clamps and a filter with male adapters and just cut out the old one. But it's still a 20 minute job. Also try some dry gas or fuel treatment. If you change it and it's still acting up I think a Vacuum leak or a weak coil is the culprit. Hope this helps.

Engine starves for fuel after running about 50 miles or so...

Has Neon do same, I ran fuel at low level, on hot day, ran engine until it started to act up & threw a fuel pressure gauge on it. Was at approx 5 psi. Cold next morning, 48-50 psi. Always hot day about 30-40 miles into work in morning, o.k. Sit in hot sun all day & would happen 3-4 times on way home. Sit and let cool, 20 minutes or so & go again for a while. Cool day, no problem. Change pump I would.

I have a troy built self propelled mower, it ran great last season, now it will not stay running. I checked to see if it was getting fuel and it is. I primed it and it acts like it is going to run and then...

The jets in carbs are really small and clog easily. If you stored your mower with gas in it start by replacing the gas. Remove the air filter and prime the carb. Start the engine and place your fingers over the air intake on the carb. This will cause the engine to stall as it will be starved for air. It will also create a powerful suction on the jets and possibly dislodge a blockage. Prime the engine again and start. If does not continue to run, repeat the steps again. If after 3-4 tries your engine wont run you will have to remove the carb and clean the jets manually. The reason your engine runs for a short time is because it is burning the fuel that you put in there by priming it. After that the fuel comes through the jets in the carb and if these jets are clogged the engine will die.
