Question about Hitachi 57F500 57" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

57F500A, powered light on with no sound/picture, ticking noise

I have a Hitachi projection television, model 57F500A, serial V3K011368

Originally it had a convergence issue with 2 colors not lining up. I replaced the chips and had it working for about an hour when the picture and sound went out even though the red "on" light was still on. I opened it back up to now find a convergence resistor burnt (the RK54 which I examined to think was a Brown/Green/Gold), which I replaced and tried again, but still no picture or sound.

I still have the back off, so what I did notice was of the LEDs that light up (2 green on left, 2 green on back right, 1 red on near to me right) the closest of the back right green LEDs (D940) was blinking in sync with a ticking sound (like a spark but no fuel) and the near right red LED (D915) was dimming in sync with the ticking.

I read one of the responses here that it could be a fuse issue, there are two 5A 125V, and one 6A 125V. Is this the problem? If so I've called local stores about their fuse availability and I can get 5A in a 250V form, which I'd not prefer due to the point of the fuse. The other can come in a 6.25A slow blow, which I'm not sure what the TV requires.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The thing is, the resistor hasn't blown again, and what explains the ticking and LED flashes?

I've replaced the 3 Fuses and there was no change.

Over the years of servicing these sets and others for Convergence issues, I have on several times gotten defective Convergence ICs. In your case where a Resistor is now open, (Probably a 1.5 ohm 1/2 watt), I would suspect you had gotten a hold of a defective IC. I would replace them both again. Make sure to use Heat Sink Compound between the ICs and Heat Sink.(Just a thin coating on the metal area) You can get the heat sink compound from Radio Shack. They should also have the Resistor you need.
Good luck,

I do not think that it is a open fuse. It it was, one of the LEDs would not light at all. If you have blinking LEDs that go in cadence with the ticking sound I would check the Horizontal Output Transistor, and the HV Output Transistor with a OHM METER and see if one is shorted. These would also be attached to their own heat sinks. One would be near the High Voltage Transformer and the other would be left center on the Deflection Board. If they are ok I would unsolder the new Convergence ICs. Then turn it on to see if the set runs. If it runs, replace the ICs again as a pair. It may not burn the resistor at this point because the set is going into a protect mode that will not allow it to go to full power up. I wish I had a dime for every new defective Convergence IC I have seen. Especially a STK392-110.

Hitachi Projection TV 57F500A red looks double.

You need to replace both of the convergence IC's and any bad resistors around them that protect them from damaging the power supply.

This repair can usually be done in the home and takes about an hour; I have done hundreds of them and now is a slow time of year for TV shops; look around if you are not able to do this repair; you can buy the chips on Ebay for less than 15 dollars for a pair plus shipping.

This is a very common problem in projection sets.

My hitachi 57f500a picture went out and sound. When you power up you can hear the clicks and the red light in front comes on solid. Out of the five leds on the power board four of them are on when...

There should be a solder in pico fuse(yellow) close to that LED labled E...something. It is most likely open. If so, check to see if there is a blue high voltage capacitor(2kv) in front of the H.output transistor. If yes, replace them both...if no try just replacing the pico fuse.
