Why is my Dyson DC40 blowing and not sucking

actually if it is moving air as your question suggests, nothing is wrong with the unit, if it is blowing then it is in fact sucking...I feel the problem may be user error.

Why is it blowing and not sucking

Hello, this is Ava with Think Crucial.

Most of the time the reason why vacuum is not picking up is due to loss of suction. You may need to check for blockages of your wand and hose. Remove the wand and hose from your cleaner when checking for blockages and any damages. Make sure to turn off and unplug your vacuum from the power before doing this. Please refer to this troubleshooting guide for more information on how you can remove blockages:

The cleaner is no sucking at the brushes or the attachment

Hi Jeremy, it's Jack at Dyson.

Although I appreciate you've checked your DC40 for blockages, if it doesn't seem to have suction from the cleaner head or wand this is likely to be the cause. It's possible you may have overlooked something in the changeover valve or one of the internal air ducts. I'd encourage you to check again following the steps shown in our Support videos, just to make sure:

If this doesn't make a difference, your machine's filters may be overdue for a wash. In normal use, this should be done at least once a month, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them:

This should resolve the issue, but if you're still concerned after trying each of these checks I'd encourage you to contact our experts directly so we can help. If a repair or replacement part is needed, we can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson warranty.

I cleaned the brush took the whole head apart put it back together now it wont pick up anything. plus it only works whennyou release the handle

Hi Jennifer, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most current Dyson upright vacuums, DC40's brush bar is engineered to shut off for protection if something jams it. Although I appreciate you've already checked the cleaner head for any issues, you might like to do so again following the steps shown in the Support video I've attached. You should then be able to reset the machine.

Please note, the brush bar will never rotate when the machine is standing upright, so please recline it into the normal vacuuming position before testing it. With the machine running, press the silver brush control switch twice.

You may also like to check for any blockages which could be effecting pickup performance. Just follow the steps shown in our online troubleshooting guide: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc40/dc40-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-up-well

If you're still having difficulty after you've given this a try, it would be best if you can get in touch with us directly so our experts can provide further assistance. Dyson upright and canister vacuums come with a 5-year warranty, and if a repair or replacement part is needed we'll be happy to confirm if this is covered.

You can reach the Dyson customer Helpline by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Dyson dc40 motor not working, only brush turns

Hi Elsa, it's Jack at Dyson.

Like most Dyson vacuums, DC40 has a thermal cutout which will shut off the machine if it begins to overheat. This can often be due to a blockage, or because the filters need a wash.

Your machine should reset itself automatically after it's had a few hours to call down. However, to prevent any damage to your machine we'd recommend using our online Support guide to check for any blockages you may have missed: http://www.dyson.com/support/dc40/dc40-multi-floor/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-up-well/both-checks-checking-wand-and-hose-step-1

In normal use we recommend washing both filters at least once a month, using cold water without detergent as shown in the video attached. Allow at least 24 hours for the filters to dry completely before replacing them - it can help to place them by a radiator, or inside an airing cupboard.

If you'd like some further help after you've given this a try, you're welcome to contact our experts directly. You can reach us by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US) or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

Not sucking strongly enough

Hi Neil, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC40 isn't picking up as well as it should be, it's likely there will be a blockage that you may have missed. The most effective way to check for this is to follow the steps shown in our online Support guide: http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc40/dc40-multi-floor-complete/my-machine-is-not-working/machine-not-sucking-up-well/both-checks-checking-wand-and-hose-step-1

We'd also recommend washing both filters, which should be done at least once a month in normal use - the video attached should help. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for them to dry before replacing them.

If you'd like some further help after you've given this a try, please call our experts directly on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), or 1-877-397-6622 (CA).

My Dyson DC40 Animal sounds like it's running on half power. I've only had it one day and it seemed great considering it was sucking up an incredible amount of half/dirt. I took the canister to empty it,...

I would recommend you check the gaskets and make sure they are all connected properly so the vacuum doesn't lose suction. Also, check the filters. If they get too dirty the vacuum will lose suction.

You could check out Dyson's site: dyson.com/support.aspx

Hope that helps.
