Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have (2) ION CD02 dual CD players with the same problem. The right deck will not recognize that a CD is loaded in it, thus it won't play. The left deck is fine on both. I thought it was a bad deck, so I bought one from ION parts, replaced it, but the same problem persists. It must be a problem on the mother board? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Greg(Lakes Region TV)

    Hi Tim,

I believe I did that swap, in the beginning, and that's what led me to believe that the deck was bad, as the left deck played OK on the right side, after the swap. So I bought a new deck, from ION parts($60.00 +) and installed it. It worked initially, but when I let a fellow DJ use it, he said it quit again. I gave up after that, but now another new unit, that was unpacked to test a couple years ago & repacked, is doing the same thing. I don't have a schematic, & as you know, working "in the dark" on these things is a nightmare. I've since bought the same player, with the Numark name(Mix 2), for my friend. He says it is flawless. I hate to throw the 2 ION players out, especially since one of them has literally no hours on it(if they can be repaired cheap).

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Hi Tim,

I believe I did that swap in the beginning, that's what led me to believe it was a bad deck, as the left deck played OK on the right side. So I bought a deck from ION parts($60.00 +) and replaced it. It worked initially. I let a fellow DJ borrow it & he said it played a couple CD's & quit again. At that point I gave up & bought him the same item with the Numark name(Mix 2). He said it has been flawless.

Recently I went to use my other ION CD02, which was still brand new in the box, & it has the same problem !

I hate 2 throw both of those ION players out, if there is a cheap fix for them.

I don't have a schematic. I'm sure you know, trying to work on these things "in the dark" is a nightmare.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Tim,

That is correct. The second unit, has the same problem, right out of the box. I got discouraged & did not try anything with the 2nd machine, after discovering the same problem. The cover hasn't been off it yet.

    Tim,

Just a thought: do you have a phone number I can call you at, or is that "against the rules"?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Tim,

It acts like it doesn't recognize that a CD has been loaded.

I put a CD in the tray, it retracts & the door closes, it starts spinning, then, after a few seconds, the display reads "NO CD".

    Any clues?

    I should try calling ION?

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • nhcastle Jul 23, 2009

    Tim,

    Yeah, that's what I thought.

The left deck works fine on both units.

We thought it was a CD issue also, but the same CD's play fine in the left deck.

I got one of these same units, for my friend, a few years ago. He's got hundreds & hundreds of hours on it, playing all day in the hot sun, all night............it's bullet proof. Gets hauled around in a trailer, rough handled etc.

It's discouraging to say the least.

I just tried calling ION, but it's after their business hours. I'll try tomorrow.

Have you ever worked on one of these yourself?

    Thanks,

    Greg

  • nhcastle Jul 23, 2009

    Tim,

What makes these decks determine if a CD is in the drive?

    What makes it "read"?

I guess the question is, what makes the right side not "see" the CD in the drive?

I'm sure you're as puzzled as me.

I've been a technician for over 40 years(tv's, radios etc.) but have no experience with CD players. Don't even know how they function.

  • nhcastle Jul 23, 2009

Yeah, it's a mystery to me.

The same CD's play fine in the left side, but will not play in the right side. Strange that when I put the new deck in the 1st unit, it worked at first. I thought I had cured the problem. It's like those intermittent problems with TV repairs, real headaches. Might be something simple, and cheap, but what?

If I sent one of these to you, could you repair it? I think I paid around $250.00 for these, new. I've already got over $60.00 in one of them. Hate to keep throwing more money at them. The other guy liked his Numark so much, he asked me to get him another one for a backup. They are $245.00 new.

    Tim,

    I called ION.

They do not repair the units.

    They outsource the repairs.

Warranty repairs are done in Nevada, which they would not give me a phone number to.

There are 3 after warranty service centers. 2 on the west coast, 1 in New Jersey.

I called the New Jersey people.

They have notes about changing transport mechanisms, which is what I did, but have no idea why it won't work, after the change. They will work on it, if I send it in, for about $155.00

I'm going to call the other 2 on the west coast & see if they have any ideas.

But it looks like I'm back to square one. I paid about $250.00 for these things & it doesn't make sense to spend over half that to fix them. I'd be better off buying new ones.

Is there anyone else, in this "FixYa" deal that might know about this?

    Thanks,

    Greg

    Tim,

Just called facility # 2 in Hollywood, CA

Same answer. They also have replaced the decks, but have not had repeat problems.

I guess I should have sent that deck back to ION, right after it failed again, and gotten a 3rd one to try. Maybe it was a defective deck they sold me.

I'll try facility # 3, but they will probably have the same answer.

I don't think ION would take that deck back now, it's been too long.

Will let you know what # 3 says.

Yes it sounds like the port on the motherboard where the deck connects is having issues, either that or the communications processor. Either way it is going to be extremely difficult to replace if that is what you are attempting to do. If you can, you can try swapping the right deck to the left one and checking if it works on that port.

Hope this helps

Tim

So wait, let me get this straight here. You did the swap, it worked at first, then someone borrowed the unit and it stopped working?

Then you say you have another identical unit and it has the exact same problem? You didn't swap any of the parts into / out of that one did you?

You have two identical machines with identical problems? Is that what you're telling me? And you tried swapping the part on one of the machines, it fixed the problem for a while and came right back?

    Please confirm.

    Thanks
    Tim

Wow, that is completely bizarre, it shouldn't have that problem. You are certain you didn't somehow disable that cd deck on that side? The fader is in the middle right, an you have tried moving it around to make sure the right hand side isn't "muted"?

For two to have the exact same problem is completely bizarre, have you tried them in different outlets at your place to see if somehow it's a voltage issue? Have you ever been able to get the right one to work successfully on either unit? Is it possible that you are not operating it correctly somehow? I doubt that's the case. Does the display on the unit show that it is playing at all when you put a disc in the right hand side?

Unfortunately I'm not even by a phone right now, plus I don't think they like us talking outside the site =(. Sorry about that.

Also, have you tried call ION to see if they have a suggestion? It wouldnt surprise me if somehow something was just disabled. For two of these units to have identical problems just doesnt make sense.

    Their number is 401.658.3743

I would definitely try calling ION, that is beyond bizarre. You can then put the same cd in the other drive and it reads it?! And this happens on both units the same exact way? That is totally un-explainable as far as I can see. Let me know what ION says if you call them.

The laser reads the actual disc, and then a processor on the board interprets the data. I'm just confused as to how two players can have the exact same issue unless the disc is the problem.

Unfortunately I can't have you send them to me through the site here. Did you give ION a call? It really makes no sense that two units have this problem, it may be a simple configuration thing that somehow I don't know about and they could tell you how to fix it in 2 minutes. I can't imagine that two units had a cd drive fail in each, and the same cd drive at that! Makes no sense. It should have fixed it when you replaced the drive, so the fact that it worked for a little bit and failed again is very troublesome. It sounds like something on that right hand drive controller is killing drives, but how can it be happening in both? Unless this model had a design flaw I suppose...

I highly doubt anyone else would be able to assist you on here, and if we give up on my assistance I get no credit at all for the help. I guess they are not under warranty of any kind either eh? It definitely sounds like you are having electrical issues with the "motherboard" of the unit essentially. I still can't get over the fact that you have two units doing identical things, that's like ordering two keyboards and somehow both of them have defective K keys or something, unless it's a known problem with that model product the chances of having identical problems is astronomical, it just doesn't happen in electronics. I wonder if there really is an issue with these units and they just dont want to admit it and want you to pay for repairs.

Let me know what you come up with from the other two.

Ok sounds good, keep me updated. It definitely sounds like somehow you got a bad deck again. I would just tell them you didn't try installing it til now, hopefully someone will be understanding and swap one out for you.

Moodey newmark cd mix 2

Just wanted to tell you i have the same problem with my right deck! after about 2-3 hours of usage the right deck will start to skip while playing a cd...almost sounds like im fast forwarding then itll just stop playing, but only on the right deck! Ive noticed that it happens when the unit gets hot whether by usage or sunlight. Now as for youre issue about the crackling, i have two staements one is the cd youre playing scratched? ive had cds that have had minor path scratches that follow around the cd not straight across scratches..while playing this sounds like static or crackle then fades away! I would recommend playing the cd in a entirely different unit to see if this is the prob...if you know this is not the issue i would say that its a loose connection to a capicator or that a capacitor is on the way out...this happens when the capacitor is cold and doesnt let proper flow to go thru but as the capacitor heats up it it may heat the connection making a better contact.....just out of curiousity do you have the right rated fuse in the holder.. sometimes just having a fuse off by a couple of volts or milliamps can cause the same effect

hi, check that when the right side tray closes the screen must show up READ or DISC CHECK. the behaviour must be the same as the left side cd deck. if loading is faulty then the cd tray is out of alignment or sensing swithches are faulty. if disc is loading then u have a laser pickup problem or the laser ribbon cable is intermittent or the spindle motor is tired or the laser lens needs accurate cleaning. cheers.
