Question about Canon PowerShot SD990 IS / Digital IXUS 980 IS Digital Camera

Open Question

Lens error, cannon camera

I have a Cannon powershot A550 digital camera, my brother dropped it and the lens is half open and half closed. whenever I startup my camera the screeen displays a message that says, "lens error. restart camera". I have also run out of warranty and i don't wanna pay for the repair. Please tell me a possible solution to fix my camera.

Please post this under Canon PowerShot A550 rather than Canon PowerShot SD990 IS. As for your problem, is the lens retracted with the shutter open or is it out with the shutter closed?

SOURCE: lens error message Canon Powershot A550

Canon A550 and A560 have the same body and most of the internal parts, including lens assembly are the same. Canon won't sell individual parts within the lens assembly. There could be two possiblities. One is (unlikely) that the lens assembly components have been knocked off from their position. The other is that because of a knock, or dropping the camera, the gears in the gearbox of the lens assembly are broken. These gears are the same as the ones in A530/A540, and are available from ebay for $12.50 including shipping. Checkout my site for how to open up the camera and the lens assembly to replace these:

http://pkrobot.freehostia.com/MiscElectronics2.htm

For A550 and A560, if you take it to the professional repair shop, it might not be cost effective, since it might cost around $90. Canon does not sell gears, so they might have to replace the entire lens assembly. The new camera is available these days for around $140.

SOURCE: help

Here's the support site for your camera. Click on the "Downloads and Drivers" tab, select your operating system, and then download the appropriate driver for your system (note some OS don't require a driver.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=221&modelid=11125

You can also download the "Zoombrowser" program here, but it's 72 megs, and might take a while.

This is basically the infamous Canon "E18" error, which has been around for quite a while.
I would type out my own suggestions but since it's such a common error I'll just direct you to a nice long list of solutions already compiled elsewhere: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

Lens Error

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.
