When trying to play either a cd or dvd, the player will simply not work. I can hear the mechanism working, sounds like it's looking media to play but can't find anything. While this is going on, I can't stop the machine, turn it off or anything.

If you have audio from the radio, all of the internal components are working, such as the power amp. If the CD section is not working, a switching relay, or connection may be at fault. If a read head is misaligned, you cannot pick up data from the CD and communicate with the audio out either. If the CD's are CLONES (copies) they too may not work. There are many reasons, and that mentioned are only a few.
Think has other dvd players worked before on that tv. If so then has anything about the current dvd player changed such as the yellow red white cord? If so changing the old one back will help. The dvd player r/y/w jacks could be loose and the tv jacks could be loose as well which can cause a poor visual or no visual at all. If other dvd's work then its simply the dvd itself, make sure your not trying to play a blueray dvd in a regular dvd player they wont work in a normal player.
You need to open top cover and look inside dvd player cd tray. Does dvd / cd disc spins or having loading problem because grrrrr seems mechanical problem. Let me know your finding to guide you further. Thank you.
This sounds like your player is on the way out.
If it,s 2 years or more older, i,d consider getting a new player, they,re cheap now £20-£30 ish Plus.
The remote will be new-Batterys. The DVD Player laser is probably on the way out. The mechanical sounds are possibly the laser head moving up and down, struggling to read The Data on The Disk.
Heres all you can do before Binning it.
1:- try a laser head disk cleaning Kit.
2:- put new batterys In The remote.
3:- ensure the underside of the CD/DVD are clean of fingerprints And scratches.
Hope this Helps Mike @ Compurepair.
I have come across one DVR-S120 that has a shorted spindle motor. This is the motor that spins the disk. Therefor the unit will not play a cd or dvd. Yamaha sale's the complete dvd Assy. for $300 witch is absurd.
you can try this unplug the unit , you'll need alchohol, q-tips, screwdriver open it and look for all the flat cable connectors. be carefull and remove 1 side at the time ,and clean the contacts, put them back on , see if you can see the optic laser inside the mechanism it looks like a crystal eye, if you can reach it be gentle and clean the dust may it have. or buy at radio shack a cd cleaner. if after that your dvd don't work with dvds try a regular cd. if it plays music the laser its bad nothig else you can do. cheaper to buy a new one
