To begin with, try visiting Windows Update and run a custom scan of your system. See if it offers you updates for your sound card. That might take care of it for you.
If not, you may have to roll back the driver to one that is supported by your system. Sometimes these driver update utilities install the most recent release for a manufacturer's hardware, regardless of whether your system will support the driver, and the newer driver simply won't work with your configuration.
This tutorial will give you an excellent guide to updating (or rolling back) the driver manually. Also see here.
You can usually visit your computer manufacturer's support page to download the original drivers for your system, to get the sound working again, and update as necessary from there.
Other possibly helpful links if that doesn't resolve the problem are here and here.
You may discover that you have to disable the driver detective software or block it from changing your sound drivers if the problem reoccurs...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

You could try this.

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Click on Device Manager and look for Sound, Video and Game Controllers

Click the small X to expland the list and double click on your Soundblaster card.

Click the tab titled Drivers and click on Roll Back Driver.

This will return your soundblaster to the previously installed driver...

Reboot the pc and see if you have sound...

I hope this helps

Disable the realtek from bios, then uninstall its drivers.
Reboot
If Soundblaster is not auto detected go to Device Manager and click on menu "Search for new hardware". After your card is detected, install specific drivers
Reboot
and that should do the trick.

Dell e520 running Vista fully updated has no sound

Depending on the audio hardware configuration, you may have a hardware conflict.

If you have an expansion sound card (Usually a Soundblaster card in the slots below the video card) then you need to ensure the integrated audio in BIOS is DISABLED.

If you have no expansion card, then ensure the BIOS Audio device is ENABLED.

If integrated and no device found in Device Manager, turn it off in BIOS, reboot then reenable it and see if it is detected.

If issue still continues, try flashing the BIOS and see if that resolves. If no change, you may end up getting an expansion audio card or resintalling Windows to resolve.

Update the driver as no sound

Do you have the original soundblaster disk ? If so download the software onto your computer, then update the driver as you have to have the sound software also installed, not just the driver.
