Question about Pentax Optio 60 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lens Error Once I turn on my camera, I get the regular screen mode and before I can take a picture it says lens error and turns off the camera. The lens comes out all the way once turned on and retracts once it shuts down.

SOURCE: On power up, lens extends camera beeps then retracts.

I had this same exact problem with my optio s7, and couldn't find an answer online to fix it.

I tried tapping the camera on a table (not too hard - just a firm tap), and it works normally now. I know this sounds a bit extreme, and perhaps you have already solved your problem, but this solved a lot of frustration for me.

Maybe.
But it does seem to be a lens problem. Possibly the lens is out of sync as mentioned in another post here.If there is a grinding, the lens is probably damaged by dirt or sand.
Make sure the batteries or battery is fully charged.

This is a common problem with with cameras with retractable zoom lens .

Heres a few thing you should try :

Fix #1: Remove the batteries from the camera, wait a few minutes. Put a fresh set of batteries back in (preferably rechargeable NiMH 2500mah or better) and turn the camera on.
Fix #2: Remove the batteries, then remove the memory card. Then install the new batteries, when you turn it on it should come back to life. If you get another type of error message this may mean you don't have a memory card installed, so turn it off, slip in the memory card and turn it on one last time.

Fix #3: Insert the cameras Audio/Video (AV) cable, and turn the camera on. Inserting this cable ensures that the camera's LCD screen remains off during the start process. Thus extra battery power is available to the camera's lens motor during startup. This extra power can be useful in overcoming grit or sand particals that may be jamming the lens. If the AV cable doesn't fix the lens error by itself, consider keeping this cable installed while trying fixes 4, 5, and 7 as a means to provide extra help to these fixes. But note that I DON'T recommend keeping the cable installed during Fix 6 as you may damage the AV port while tapping the camera. Reinsert the cable only AFTER tapping the camera.

Fix #4: Place the camera flat on its back on a table, pointed at the ceiling. Press and hold the shutter button down, and at the same time press the power-on button. The idea is that the camera will try to autofocus while the lens is extending, hopefully seating the lens barrel guide pins in their slots.

Fix #5: Blow compressed air in the gaps around the lens barrels with the idea of blowing out any sand or grit that may be in there jamming the lens. Other variations include blowing with a hair dryer in “no heat” setting, or sucking the gaps with a vacuum (careful with this one). TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM AGAIN : Keep away from dust, dirt, grit, sand and any camera bag that has loose fibres (clean it before use).
If this helps you, please vote...thankyou and good luck!

''Lens Error'' with Nikon Coolpix S10

Turn the Coolpix S10 on using the button to the left of the 'OK' rocker which has a picture of a camera and an arrow beside it. You may need to hold this button in for several seconds before it responds.
The camera should turn on in the mode used to view stored photos, and this may bypass the lens error message. Pressing the button again can get the camera to switch to picture taking mode. This worked on my S10 after I dropped it. Hope it works for you! regards Thomas Mann

First a black screen, then a lens error

For the lens error:

For the black pictures (after you've corrected the lens error):

Note, if you're going to try fix 5a on the above blog page, do it with the camera turned off to lessen the chance of damaging the lens.

Camera turns off after lens comes out in shooting mode.

I'd recommend that you stop banging or fiddling with the lens as it does not sound like a lens error (if it were so, you'd still get an error even in review mode). Instead it sounds like the brand of batteries that you're using may not be providing sufficient power.

Alkaline batteries just don't have the power for more than a few pics in a digital camera. Some may even have problems just powering startup of the camera. Digital cameras for the most part should only be used with rechargeable NiMH batteries. Most retailers sells these for around $7 for a package of four (about $15-19 for the batteries with charger). Keep in mind they'll save you big bucks in the long run over alkalines, AND they'll last for at least 100 pictures per charge (and probably many many more). You'll be very pleased with their performance, and may slap yourself for not buying them sooner. When at the store, look on the package for a power rating of at least 2500 mah.

Zoom Error

Lens unit has to come out to see whether the problem can be sorted out without spares going in. But unfortunately you have to go from the back on this model which means disconnecting and removing all 3 pc boards and the LCD screen and then loosening the lens mounting to slide the lens out from the back. You may have to dismantle the free lens further once it is out to see exactly what the damage is ( if any ).

Camera freezes in any picture taking mode

Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. you need professional service to fix it.
