Question about Televison & Video

HDTV goes blank when connected to Fios HD-DVR or Fios DTV recvr.

I have a Samsung HP-S5073 Plasma HDTV connected to a Verizon Fios Motorola HD-DVR via HDMI cable. After approximately 30 minutes, the screen goes blank but the sound stays on, the DVR is hot enough to fry an egg on it! The DVR is not enclosed, it's sits on a stand 3 feet under the TV & is well ventilated by the breeze coming through the front door, I know ventilation is not a problem. To see if it's a DVR or HDTV problem, I disconnected the DVR & connected a play station & played a DVD, the DVD played for over an hour without any problems. I then connected a none HD Fios receiver to the HDTV & after 30 minutes the screen went blank, same situation as the DVR. I then connected a CRT TV to the Fios none HD receiver & the TV worked fine, it stayed on for the remainer of the evening. Verizon has sent me out a replacement DVR which I should get today. The DVR I have now is brand new, I have had Fios for 4 weeks & this happens every day & night whenever the TV is turned on. I had a Directv HD-DVR up to 4 weeks ago without any problems.

If you can first connect the Fios box via component and that will rectify the issue and still allow HD. HDMI is funny, if there is anykind of communication issues between the TV or the Fios box you see what happens. You might also call Samsung to see if there is ANY firmware/software updated for your TV specifically to fix such an issue with the Fios/Mortorola connection. If there isn't then the issue is the cable box since the TV works ok on HDMI with other devices.

Looking to buy a Samsung HP-S5073 Plasma, and the owner says that the screen goes blank sometimes. (But the sound still works while the screen is blank). This could happen for 5 minutes or an hour. Then it...

There is a possibility that this comes from poor signal quality. Re-booting the television may stop this behavior for a period of time, but if the problem is not corrected, it will return.

There could also be an internal problem with the television.

(Personally, I would look to buy something else.)

Hope this helps!

If by regular cables you are talking about the standard red/yellow/white composite cables, then, yes, it will affect HD as composite cannot send an HD signal. Only HDMI and component (red/blue/green video only) cables.

Change to HDMI and let us know if it works for you.

Don't want to use receiver to turn Plasma on via Verizon DVR

You can not have a signal from cable/satelite TV when reciever is OFF.The only way is reconnect by using defferent setup configuration to illiminate the receiver. In that case you well see just regular Tv program but you should connect antena to your TV.

Connecting HD cable box to DVR too HDTV

When I hooked up my HD cable box using an HDMI cable, I had to go into the cable screen menus and select HDMI output. You may have to do something similar when using an S-video cable. Your DVD recorder doesn't seem to have an HDMI input, so you'll have to use the S-video or (worst case) composite video (red, white, yellow cords). Your cable box may also be scrambling the signal so that you can't record. That may be why you can record by bypassing the cable box.

"Not supported Mode" message

Hook up the component cables on the tv and the dtv box
go to set up on the menu select HDTV or display and deselect all of the 480i and 480p and in some cases also the 720 and only select 1080i to be display. you can then hook up your hdmi cable again and it shoud be supported. Let me know if that works.
