Question about HP DesignJet 130NR InkJet Printer

Encoder disc replacement

My name is Wayne, and I have an HP 130 that is no longer under warranty.
I was maintaining the inside of the printer and did something to give me the dreaded "3 symbol" display on the printer panel... (X-sheet/finger-button/paper jam). HP Support explained what it could be, so sure enough, I had accidently knocked the Encoder Disc off the gear so I removed the top and left panels, exposing the errant part and the other innards.
I am wondering what position this disc is reinstalled at and can I do it myself? Thanks for anyone who can help me! Wayne
HP said; "Please note that the Encoder Disc is not a customer replaceable part and it requires trained HP Technician to replace the Encoder Disc. I understand your concern and would request you to get the printer serviced through an authorized HP service provider.

The disk itself is just fastened with double sided tape to the gear. You only have to press it back onto the gear making sure that it passes between the opening in the u shaped sensor.

Looking to replace HP 3820 printer with another printer. Perhaps one with cheaper cartridges. HP Windows 98 is the operating system.

first of all, try to stay aay from inkjet printers -- they cost too much to maintain, relative to the overall cost when you buy one. secondly, Windows 98 is no longer supported. My suggestion is to buy HP laserjet ,as toners last longer and the average cost to maintain per year , after the first two years is approximately $50-$200 , and then another two years before you have to maintain again. Spend $400-500 for laserjet and save in th end.

Do the math and figure out the cartridge cost over 1 year for inkjet.

hope this helps

The thin plastic strip (I think it's the indexing strip) came out when I put my hand inside to clear a paper jam (and I wasn't looking--grr). How can I put this back in the printer?

That is the encoder and it hooks to either side of the printer chassis or wall. It is what tells the print head where it is and where to go.
To replace it or put it back, you need to take the top cover off.
Best advice is to get a local tech to do it.
If it is still under warranty, call HP.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response

Thanks, Joe

Make sure that your source disc is compatible with your drive. if it has a dvd, then you can use dvd disc.

Also, try to download and install the DVD/CD driver for your laptop.

The "plastic strip" is the position encoder of the print head, it holds itself in place by two latches, one is fixed and the other is flexible, you have to put the encoder in the flexible latch first by holding it at an angle and then in the fixed one, probably you'll have to disassemble the MFP to have access and a better view of the parts.

Encoder strip part c8941-80005

an encoder strip is seriously easy to replace! the strip rides thru a sensor on the ink cartridge carriage. one end hooks on to a small "hook"" on the left side of the plotter. the other end connects to a small "hook" on the encoder strip spring which connects to the right side of the plotter. Most manufacturers consider anything inside the case to be "not user replaceable". but really, its harder to keep the pictbridge bezel (cover) from falling out than it is to replace the encoder strip.
in response to jktyler.. my 2 year old did the same. if the small slots on the ends of the encoder strip are broken, then the strip is definitely damaged.
