my screen just falls back, wont stay up, do i need new hinges, or a different part? how do you get the hinges out? i tried to, i had it all apart, but the hinges themselves wouldnt come out..
HP Armada E500 was one of the best commercial grade machines. Mine still works great except for my fingers getting slammed because the hinges are shot.
HP Compaq has absolutely no solutions. They suck! There is a guy that posted on the web a 7" external hinge from the hardware store with Gorilla glue that does the trick. He even gives step by step instructions and illustrations... Don't count on Compaq HP they really could care less if you ever buy their products again!! So I won't!!

This is and has been an onging issue with the E500. Either the hinges wear out and/or the plastic around the hinges on the LCD enclosure starts cracking. The usual fix is to replace the LCD assembly. However the problem will come back. My advice is to buy a better laptop.

Does anyone else ever get tired of people telling them to "chuck it and buy new"? Or maybe, that old hack: "Fix your Microsoft problem by switching to (insert opensource program here)." Personally, I'd *rather* fix the problem than admit defeat and replace the product . . . I've learned a lot that way.
So, enough with my ranting. My E500 hinges are shot too. I downloaded the technical manual and it shows how to remove the display, but I'm staring at the bare hinges right now and they appear to be more or less solid-state. Nothing to tighten. Maybe there's something under the plastic, but that part is attached to the display and I'm not quite confident enough to get into dissecting that yet.
On the other hand, there is a "miscellaneous plastics kit" which comes with cables and all those little plastic parts that are cracking with age. If you're interested, the part number for that is:
"miscellaneous plastics kit 159536-001" I googled it and so far the price ranges from 25.00USD to 80.00USD.
I'll let you know how the dissection goes, if you're interested. Hell, I'd use duct tape and gorilla glue rather than throw away something that works, just because there's something newer out there.
