Good day,
You said it was iced up. That is an indication the defrost system is not working. The thermostat (round Disk??) if it popped out is probably due to swelling. Replace it.
Since the machine is empty, unplug and leave the doors open for 24 hours.
1. Air sensing thermometers will rise rapidly when the door is open. Not a trusted method.
2. The compressor will not run because you open the door. there is a time delay for refrigerator thermostats to react.
3. Leaving it unplugged with the doors open will guarantee that hidden ice in supply and return chutes has completely melted. IMPORTANT.
Below is a good tutorial on defrost systems.
Hope this helps , but if you need to post back please include make, style and complete model number.

The thermal bulb has gone bad and needs to be replaced you can order it and replace the thremal bulb normally has three wires that are color coded and can the thermal bulb can be fished in place. Any appliance store would sell them and you need to do something before if freezes and cracks the lines on the back or the lines in the freezer.
