Question about Sony KP-57WV600 57" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television
My TV is 6 years old, some repair techs want to charge me $500 to replace it, some have said Sony no longer supplies the CRT and I should buy a new TV...What to do?
Is there a source to purchase the CRT and replace it myself?
Should I spend the $500 and have a tech come to my home and perform the repair, or do I go shopping?
Don`t even think of replacing it yourself, You don`t just change the tube which involves disharging the 40 000 volts from the tube, You also have to perform a convergence setup where the three beams have to be overlayed or superimposed on top of each other right across the screen. This is a very time consuming job and it`s not easy, I used to do this and you NEVER get it perfect. You have to know how to get into service mode. etc etc. What the engineer has said is quite right, the problem is it takes two men to dismantle and pick up the chassis from your home and take it to the workshop, It has to be worked on, new tube ordered and as I mentioned earlier, the mammoth task of setting up the convergence. When all this has been done, two men have to return the chassis and reinstall it into the cabinet. When you get it back, the other two tubes are the same age as the one that has already failed, who`s to say when one of the others will decide to pack in. It`s a shame, but I think I`d purchase a new set where you get 12 months guarantee or even longer nowadays with many more functions than your has now with better picture quality due to technological advances etc etc. Ian
