We just used our ken more oven model number 316065304- smoke came out as the oven is dirty. With it off we noticed glowing red underneath the stove top- with the oven off. Is this the pilot light?

Depending on what model stove you have on what it uses for ignition.
Most likely a glow bar type .
even though it glows it still can be bad.
glow type needs to draw the right amps for the safety valve to open if not the right amp draw valve will not open.
that's why its called a safety Valve no glow no lite.
Change the glow ignition other then that send us the model # off your range and we can get you exact price quote on parts you need
Have a great day

soundsas if you have a dirty stove, Id reccommend running through en extended cleaning cycle, it will SMOKE, that s geting rid of any food/grease trapped inside the flue and cabinet of unit
Mine did that and I found the ignitor for the oven was bad. It was the "glow" type for pilotless ignition and it was burned out. It is supposed to glow bright red and the gas comes on and the oven will light. It was easy to tell that it was bad. But to check it I swapped the broiler ignitor with the oven ignitor and the oven worked.
Open the oven door and take the bottom panel off. you will be able to see it the hot surface ignitor starts to glow or not. Now turn the oven on and see if the hot surface gets red hot it not that is the problem. Should be able to get the part at a heating and air parts house or a appliance parts house. let me know what you find out. ken
I was looking for a solution to my problem. In reading the comments, I can probably provide more information than is given here. My Kenmore gas oven won't ignite. I have over 25 years as an electronics techincian so I am very aware of lethal voltages. I unplugged my stove, it is a 120 volt model. After pulling the panel off so I could get to the thermostat which is the piece the knob goes on, I plugged the stove in and checked to make sure I have 120VAC to the thermostat. I have a red wire which has 120Vac, the thermostat probe wires, and a yellow wire which goes down to the back of the oven. My red wire had 120Vac. I then unplugged the stove, very important at this point, and meaured with an ohmmeter across the yellow and red wires. When the oven is in the off position this is open. When I turn the oven on it is shorted. That should confirm the thermostat switch works. The next thing that has to happen is the glow bar/igniter has to glow. This is like all gas appliances, it has to glow to heat the gas valve and turn the gas on. My igniter doesn't glow so I ordered a new igniter. If your glow bar glows, it could still be the glow bar/igniter or the gas valve is not allowing gas to flow even after it is heated up. If anyone sees a problem with this procedure, please let me know.
Remove the bottom panel from inside the stove. Turn on the stove and see if the igniter glows bright red. If not glowing, replace the igniter. In some cases, even if the igniter is glowing, the resistance may not be low enough to turn on the gas valve. In either case the igniter has probably gone bad. ($50.00 to $90.00 for igniter)
most common problem with gas stoves is a bad oven ignitor, doesyour oven usually "click" start?? or use a glow style ignitor?? do you have the model number??
According to the model number you supplied it looks like your oven use a glow bar ignitor not a pilot light. In that case there is no place to hold a fire. what happens with these when you turn the oven on 120 volts goes to the ignitor causing it to heat up ,the amp draw across the ignitor causes the gas safety valve to open, and then lights the gas. So if you turn your oven on you should see a bright red glow if not probably the the ignitor, to check it you would have to verify you actually have power going to it. If the ignitor glows but the gas valve does not open you will still need to replace the ignitor has to pull about 3.2 amps across ignitor to open safety valve. Your broil burner works the same way. And most of the ovens the floor of the oven comes out to allow easier acess to the ignitor. also if you have to change the ignitor put just a dab of dish detergent on the screws to help from stripping them
