Question about Computers & Internet

5 Answers

I have a 2wire 2700 HG-V wireless router/modem gateway device. It was purchased for use with a Telephone IPS. Their support and pricing is no longer competitive. I want to use that same devise with a cable ISP. I can connect via the 4 ethernet ports to laptops or desktops, but cannot get it to function as a wireless access point for other laptops and computers in my home with various wireless adapters. I believe there is something in the firmware that limits its use to the original telephone ISP's signal. How can I overcome this problem?? For the right detailed I am prepare a reasonable "support fee".

I have been to the previously supplied link and there is inconclusive results and much form debate about whether the information on that link
    works...
This is not an acceptable solution....pointing to links is one step removed from telling me to "google the problem".

  • Mark Glawdecki Jul 23, 2009

The last input is more helpful in that it defines the problem more clearly...the solution in buying another product is not a viable or acceptable solution.
I am looking for the "fix it" so that it works solution in a step by step process.
I have to also dispute the comments about the power of this gateway as several other posts and comments suggest it is better than most.
Thanks but this is not a solution that works.

  • Mark Glawdecki Jul 23, 2009

    Hello:
The information in that link provided is 15 months old and the last comments in it refer to delays in the firm ware upgrade.
My preferred solution would be to have someone who has the much referred to firmware upgrade and or someone who has been able to overcome the block put in place by the original ISP provider.

  • Mark Glawdecki Jul 23, 2009

This is not a BT product, unless 2Wire manufactures that brand or vice versa.

  • Mark Glawdecki Jul 23, 2009

I have just confirmed that the firmware is the issue
and I have agreed to work with the support and tech people at 2 Wire to resolve this.

After letting them have access to it, they do see that there is a "block" in the firmware
and have agreed to "flash" it if I send it to them, which I will do.

Thank you for assistance, as provided.

The two wire gateway device of one which I have has an issue, there is two updates that you need to get to use it as a cable unit. first I will assume you have xp pro and will go from there. It is detected as a two wire device with norton in the device manager and you must disable the norton two wire device and download the two wwire gateway driver from the actual manufacture. you can go to www.2wire.com to download the fix for the modem not trying to lead you to a site but you have to download the patch first in order to use it, as the gateway norton is a proprietary device for this unit. here is how it's listed in device manager
Class: Network adapters
1394 gateway adapter
1394 gateway adapter 2
2 wire gateway usb
Device 2wire Gateway usb- symantec Network Security Mini-port
WAN Mini-port (IP) - symantec Network mini Port
Yellow ? other devices
this is the wireless usb and cap five ports that is offered and you must remove the symantec gateway as it gives the IP address range so go to the 2wire web site and download the file for your type modem to change the ip configuration system with your new service provider. here is the actual site of the 2 wire manufacture. http://support.2wire.com/?page=view&article=224 and since it is a proprietary system you can get support from them when you give then the serial number so they know which device you are using and the name of your new acirrer so they can set it to use the bandwidth that the new company covers. You will also have to download a file from microsoft once you make the change. As well in order to use wireless you must insert the Devices serial number into each computer that is using the wireless hook up or it will not work. Since this is a locked question for me this is as far asI go for free.

I'm guessing that this is a BT wireless router?

Do you have any idea what your current firmware version is?

If you have version 6 then have a look at this comment left on a forum:

Yes it appears BT v6 firmware can be unlocked for any ISP ! Well done Simon, he deserves a medal. I can confirm too I am able to change and save settings in the Setting > Broadband > Link Configuration page too.
Simon also notes that after the factory reset, the OpenZone function was enabled by Default. When he clicked the 'Disable' button, the status changed to 'Pending' with an explanation message:
The changes may not be instantaneous. It could take up to 30 minutes for the service to be fully enabled or disabled because of the need to communicate with the BT network. The status shows as pending until this process has completed.
With my own hub which was recently upgraded to v6.1.1.48.1, it took 2 or 3 working days to enable or disable OpenZone.

So this leads me to believe that by enabling or disabling "OpenZone", depending on what yours is currently set to should give you acess to any isp but as mentioned this could take 2 to 3 days for the change to become active.

I hope that helps..

Mike

Your router seems to use the "locked" firmware version, which blocks many home networks. Follow this link to a BT Beta Forum discussion about upgrading this box. Should give you access to everything you need to know.

Hello there, sorry about the previous expert not being much help. The issue with this device is that it is proprietary to DSL based internet service. To try and make it work with your new cable ISP is not going to work. Plus this device is notorious for having a pretty weak signal, which is definitely not recommended since you will probably be getting a boost in speed on the ISP side.

You will want to go with a general use router that supports both Cable and DSL devices. Here is an example of a good one for a very good price (and has free shipping):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000LZCIXQ?ie=UTF8&tag=dependascient-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000LZCIXQ

This will definitely alleviate the problem, and it will make is so you are future proof as well if you ever decide to change internet service type again.

Thanks!

Tim

Here is a link to a website that contains detailed information on unlocking the BT 2700HGV router:

http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/ir1002700HGV.htm

It was last updated July 19, 2009, so it contains up to date information on unlocking the capabilities of your unit. I believe it will give you the exact info you need to allow you to use the unit with your wireless equipment. It also contains a URL to an ongoing forum that deals with your equipment.

Is the DWL-520 Wireless Adapter compatible with the 2701 HG modem

Hi,
The 802.11b and 802.11g Wi-Fi networking standards are generally compatible. An 802.11b router / access point will work with 802.11g network adapters and vice versa.
There is no such conflict reported with the above devices. But as suggestion use an 802.11g wireless card with the Bell as it would give you better performance

Wireless internet on laptop

You need an external WIRELESS ROUTER or MODEM ( provided by AT&T ). After this AT&T router configuration you needs to do configuration at your laptop using CONNECTION SETUP wizard for Wireless Networks & Devices.
Then you can set IP addresses & then you will be connected to it. I hope above steps will help you.

run the telephone line from your modem into the wall jack. From the modem connect a network cable (cat5) into the back ( via the uplink port) of your linksys router . Your router can now route the IP from the modem.

2 wire 2700 hg-b

The 2Wire 2700 is a residential gateway, a modem and router in-one. There is an RJ-11 jack in the back of the gateway and this is where your dsl phone cord plugs in. There are four RJ-45 jacks in the back for connecting devices using ethernet cable. As a router is can operate both wirelessly and wired. For wireless operation you'll need the WEP key which is located on the tag on the bottom of the gateway. It's the number enclosed in brackets, between the two bar codes.

2wire 2700 HG - Many problems and can't reset it!

you need to set up the 2 wire using an RJ45 ethernet cable and not wirelessly initially, and you need to set your ethernet lan adapter to obtain an ip address automatically and then type the default 192.168.1.254 in your browser to get in the settings and then set or enable dhcp, and also enable wireless as by default it is dissabled and check the the adsl light is lit

Some 2wire routers normally come with WPA-PSK security already set up with the passkey on a sticker on the side of the router, so that may be why it stays set when you reset it.

Check that your wireles adapter is using the same type of security when you enter the passkey when wirelessly connecting.
