SimpleTech 250GB External Hard Drive Installation... (by 20 users)

posted by mysticgohan on Nov 21, 2007

Hello. I've tried to install my external hard drive in 2 different computers. Once I plug the USB cable to the PCs an icon appears on the task bar saying the Simpletech drive is being installed. When this process ends it says the drive is ready to use. However, if I try to access the drive through MyComputer, it is not even visible. If I reboot the PC it will freeze when shutting down and also when starting windows if the drive is turned on and connected to the PC. However, it is visible in the Device Manager of the control panel. It shows no problems in its Properties when accessed through the Device Manager.
In a few words, although the drive is shown in the Device Manager, it isn't visible or accessible through My Computer. I tried with 2 different computers. One with XP SP2 and the other one with Vista.
I don't know what to do. Shouldn't it be almost as simple as using a pendrive?

Hello, AGKS and thanks for your reply. There's no intallation disk. I've followed the installation instructions. Windows has the driver needed, and I was able to verify that by accessing Device Manager. It shows a "Device is working properly" status for the hard drive. However, it shows it as Disk 0 which is weird because that's the C; drive number.
Also, when I open ''My Computer ---> 'Manage", I can only see the C: hard drive as Disk 0 and the CD Rom. The simpletech external drive isn't visible.

YURB and VREMOREZ got it right for me. The problem is an unplugged connector inside the case. It's the biggest connector (long, horizontally placed and with a lot of pins). Once you plug it to the disk it'll work perfectly. Openning it was my last resort because I didn't want to lose the warranty. However, I cannot claim it because I live outside the US (where I bought it), but the solution was soooo simple! If you've got the same problem I had, this is the answer.

I have the 1TB model and it no longer connects to my laptop. It makes a noise but no icon shows up and I even have gone into My Computer>Management and tried locating it the other way but it does not even show up that way.

My computer no longer recognizes my Simpletech 250 GB device when I plug it in. What do I do?

Comment by FlickChick, posted on Aug 03, 2008

I had the same problem. Mysticgohan had the right solution. On his suggestion I did the following
  • opened the casing by removing the two recessed screws the bottom.
  • Pry the casing open. I needed an extra set of hand for this. It doesn't open all the way, but rather sort of hinges open.
  • The front of the skinny green electronic board is the USB connector, power connector, etc. On the back of the green electronic board, there is a long brown connector with gold contacts that plugs directly into the black hard drive.
  • If unseated, it will not be completely perpendicular to the hard drive.
  • Line up the contacts and plug back into the actual hard drive. You will have to press pretty hard.
  • Make sure you push it down for the whole length of the connector.
  • Before closing up the casing, plug in the power and the USB cable and taa daa, it should immediately recognize your drive.

Yurb, thanks a lot. Had the same issue, then opened the case, and the part you described really was disconnected from the USB. Works perfectly now!

Had same problems as above. For me it is a defective casing that is the only thing that holds the actual hard drive IDE connection to the convert to USB board. The connection was loose. After I removed the case and plugged the connection board directly into the hard drive, the problems went away and now it is better than new. An external case can be had for $20.
Ironically the selling point of this product is the problem. Hope this helps someone and lets the company know if it is a problem on their end. Yurb from Carolina

I bought the Simpletech Signature Mini 250GB last week and had these same issues. I wrote to the company's tech support and the solutions works. It boils down to you having to create a drive letter & partition for this. It took a little time to format, but it's all good now. I agree we shouldn't have such a headache for such a simple piece of hardware, though. I will cut/paste the info below. Once it was done, I was able to go to My Computer and see it listed as Drive H (which was what I selected).

PROBLEM: I have followed directions re: plugging device in, still cannot see device in MY COMPUTER. I have also tried plugging both USB's into computer to no avail. Even tried using it on my laptop, still not showing. My desktop is XP & loaptop is Vista. When I go to remove the dirve, it DOES show as Fujitsu, but I cannot acces the drive or locate it elsewhere. I really want to like this, but will have to return it if this issue is not resolvable.

SOLUTION: You might need to initialize the drive.

Right click on “My Computer” or “Computer” on Vista.
Select “Manage”
On the next screen select “Disk Management”
In the lower middle section you should be able to find your drive.
It will show up as Disk 1 or Disk 2….depending on how many drives you have in your computer.
If you click on the area that says Disk # you should get and option to “initialize drive”.
Also to the right it should show the allocation information for the drive. If it says “unallocated” then the drive needs to be partitioned.
Right click on the white box next to the drive listing.
Select the option “New Partition”
This will bring up the partition wizard and you will need to step through this process.
Select a primary partition.
On the next screen accept the maximum size it will provide.
On the next screen you assign a drive letter.
On the next screen you will do the format and accept the default settings.
The formatting will start and will be busy until it is complete.
You can monitor this from the disk management window.

Regards,

SimpleTech Technical Support

Hope it helps!

same problem on simple tech 250 gb ext hd. normally very reliable so i have 4 of these, (lots of foreign movie dls) after working with this off and on for months as a last attempt before writing off all this data as lost i took apart this drive and one just like it and swapped the interface cards. (what i call it) not the actual IDE cable connector card but the one that it plugs into. simple 4 torx head screws. put it all back together and hooked up, presto, worked perfectly. i right away transfered all 200 gb of data to another hd just in case. this was last ditch but it worked. maybe a design flaw in this model but i would still buy another simple tech storage device

One thing to remember is the some of the Simple drives requires the USB mini to conect to the drive and the TWO USB connects to be plugin to the computer.

You'd want to install the 'Installation and Driver disk' first before plug in the USB cable, normally.

I had the same problem when I bought a new laptop with Vista. I contacted SimpleTech but got no response to my issue.

I searched the internet and found some answers, but some were to take apart something and I did not think that was necessary. I also read one about security, but it gave information if the drive was on the network.

I thought the security thing sounded reasonable, since Vista had a lot of security enhancements so I put the hard drive on my old system. From Windows Explorer or My Computer I right mouse clicked on the drive and went to Properties. I then went to the Sharing Tab of properties and clicked the box to share the drive and clicked the box to allow all users to change files on the drive. I applied the changes, unplugged the drive from the old machine and plugged it into the USB of the Vista machine and presto chango it was recognized.

Hope this helps someone!

I tried to plug the thing into the USB hub and it wouldn't work. As soon as I plugged it into the USB port on the right side of my computer (I have a thinkpad), the SimpleTech Drive started right up.

Yurb, thanks for the solution you've postedon 6/25 - we had the same issue, followed your advice on taking the case apart, and making sure that the USB was connected firmly to the disk. It worked!

above solution doesn't work, because the drive will not show up. If it did for you, your lucky.

THE SOLUTION: first off, simpletech drives are meant for macs, work has to be done to make it PC compatible. Tjhe soltuion I employed is I connected it to a Unix computer running ubuntu (ALTERNATIVELY, find a friend with a Mac and connect the drive). You'll see it will work, then from the non-PC computer reformat the drive to NTFS. Should work.

Dear, Sweet, MYSTICGOHAN - you were sooooo right! I have so many precious pictures stored on my drive, and I could access nothing!

My computer froze every time I turned on my "F:" drive, the device manager said that it was working properly. I had searched for new drivers both on-and off-line. I had tried every USB port on my computer and different cables. After reading your solution I decided to void my warranty and take the chance. It WAS simple and it DID work. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to back up my pictures to CD's.

Same problem, at first my computer at least recognized something connected, but wouldn't open. Now it won't even recognize that something is plugged in. Only thing I haven't tried yet is taking it apart. Will try that next.

Hola. I've tried to install my external hard drive in 2 different computers. He intentado instalar mi disco duro externo en 2 diferentes ordenadores. Once I plug the USB cable to the PCs an icon appears on the task bar saying the Simpletech drive is being installed. Una vez que conecte el cable USB a la PC aparece un icono en la barra de tareas diciendo Simpletech la unidad se está instalando. When this process ends it says the drive is ready to use. Cuando este proceso termina se dice la unidad está lista para su uso. However, if I try to access the drive through MyComputer, it is not even visible. Sin embargo, si intento acceder a la unidad a través de MyComputer, no es aún visible. If I reboot the PC it will freeze when shutting down and also when starting windows if the drive is turned on and connected to the PC. Si he de reiniciar el PC cuando se congele el cierre y también al iniciar Windows, si la unidad está encendida y conectada al PC. However, it is visible in the Device Manager of the control panel. Sin embargo, es visible en el Administrador de dispositivos del panel de control. It shows no problems in its Properties when accessed through the Device Manager. No muestra problemas en sus propiedades cuando se accede a través del Administrador de dispositivos.
In a few words, although the drive is shown in the Device Manager, it isn't visible or accessible through My Computer. En pocas palabras, aunque la unidad se muestra en el Administrador de dispositivos, no es visible o accesible a través de Mi PC. I tried with 2 different computers. He probado con 2 diferentes ordenadores. One with XP SP2 and the other. Uno con XP SP2 .
