First thing is to check that the monitor cable has not come loose from the adapter port on the motherboard. To do this you will need to remove the keyboard and then you should be able to see the port underneath - it may be partially or completely unseated - if this is the case simply reseat. If not it is likely that the cable or screen itself is damaged and needs replacing.

Hello there,

maybe inside the laptop a cable got loose.
you may want to take the laptop to a technician to repair it - else you can dissassemble the laptop yourself, and check if everything is connected. google for model and instructons how to repair it or come back on me if you're willing to do it yourself

Could be the back light bulb is bad. Boot it up and using a flashlight pointed at an angle at the screen, see if you can faintly make out any images or text. if yes than its inverter or bulb time.

Before taking the laptop to a repairman, try the function (Fn) key and F6 (display assignment rotation) key combination. Press and hold the Fn key and then press the F6 (CRT/LCD) key several times slowly to rotate the screen selection through its settings (LCD only, LCD/CRT both, and CRT only) just to make sure. MTG

Latitude B130 screen works great then cuts out to complete black, works with external monitor

Are you sure that the display is not set for external monitor only? Also take bright flashlight and shine on the display. If you can see the images then the problem is with the back light and usually caused by a bad inverter. Some times you can get the back light or inverter bu most times it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire display.

My Dell Latitude D820 has many problems.... The biggest one is that I came home from work to turn it on, and the screen is black... When it turns on, it is completely white. I am so upset! I just got this...

Screen issue:
It sounds like either the lcd screen or video card inside the computer is bad. To isolate the problem try connecting an external monitor to the laptop. It can be any kind of monitor even the old big fat crt monitors as long as it has a vga cable to connect to your computer's vga port. If the external monitor displays ok that proves your video card is ok and your lcd screen is the problem. If the external monitor displays the black or white screen like your lcd screen then your video card inside the computer is bad. The video will show on most systems when you reboot without you having to do anything. Some systems will require you to hit the FN (Function key) + F1 thru F12. Hold down the FN key then hit the correct key for displaying on the monitor (F1 thru F12). The correct key will normally have CRT/LCD on it or it will have the icon of a display.

Laptop hot:

Some laptops and the ac adapter get very hot. If the laptop is not shutting down, then it is not overheating, so don't worry about it. You can buy a laptop cooling pad that has fans on it and it plugs into one of the usb ports on the laptop. The laptop sits on it to keep cooler.

Your battery is probably dead so that is why you can only power it up using the ac adapter power cord. Once the power cord is removed, the laptop will turn off. Batteries only have a useful life, and after that, they have to be replaced.

My monitor on my Dell laptop went completely black while I was on it. I have tried turning it off and back on, and the monitor is not working at all

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp.
To determine if the video card or the LCD is faulty, connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be a faulty inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out; usually the CCFL lamp fails before the inverter.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
