Firstly, make sure that the cable between your monitor and your motem is plugged all the way in, then, if it still dosent work, you might need to defragment your harddrive, as the computer might be having trouble locating the pixles for part of he screen, then finally if your screen is old some of its pixles might have died, sadly theree is nothing that you can do about this, and you might need a new screen

Password at boot up (when starting) Windows 10

Windows 10's native installation makes you sign in while the computer is booting up. This is a waste of time. In order to stop the requested sign in, press the and the key at the same time. You will see the run window pop up in the lower left corner of your screen. Type . Another little screen will appear. In the upper right half of the screen there is a check box that says "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer." Click on that box to remove the check mark. Click OK or Apply on the bottom, and reboot. It should not ask you for it again.

Blank screen, power on nothing on screen

A black screen on startup can be so many things! I have learned this lesson the hard way. Never turn off the computer when it is half way through the boot procedure. Even when it is taking forever, or having a major problem you must let it run through if possible. Interrupting it once may be ok, but twice or three times is a no no. After you have carelessly restarted and shutdown a few times the black screen may appear. But this time it may be beyond repair for the average computer user.

My monitor is blank and the light flashes green and amber. i've tried checking the plugs, all is plugged in ok... driving me crazy

Verify monitor operation by UNplugging it from the computer and turning it on. A "Self Test Screen" shall appear (if it doesn't, the monitor is faulty and must be repaired).

Assuming it worked, plug it again and turn it on. After half a minute or so, turn the computer on. You should be able to see at least the BIOS POST screen: if you don't, there could be something wrong in the computer video board (maybe misconfigured, or set to output to a different, possibly internal, head - I saw it once with a Matrox VGA). Refer to the VGA manual for that.

If the POST screen appears, the problem is perforce in the OS VGA configuration. Assuming it's Windows, you can get into the safe mode boot screen by pressing the F8 key at boot, and once booted, access the video resolution configuration from the Control Panel. Set it back to something surely working, in your case 1024x768, and work it up from there.
