My compaq series 992140 laptop computer will not turn on.I have a brand new battery charged up in it and the wall plug has a little box in line with a little green light that stays on when it is plugged in. But no lights on the computer stay on at all now.

I tried what you suggested and the laptop does come on with only the battery in it and with the plug in, however a little message come on the screen that says"1782 disk controller failure". All the lights work on the laptop now. Then the screen goes blank and a message says "touch any key". I did that but the screen stays blank.

I didn't open the keyboard. How do you reset the bios?

  • timothywi157 Jul 23, 2009

It still says non system disk error on the screen.

  • timothywi157 Jul 23, 2009

Yes, the hard disk is showing. But the same message swows up on the screen when I restart the computer-"non-system disk or disk error"

Do me a favour. Try disconnecting the battery and the power supply completely. Wait for a couple of minutes. Do not connect the battery. Connect the power cord to the laptop first and then to the wall socket. Now try turning on the PC. If it works perfectly, shutdown and disconnect the power supply. Now plug in the battery and turn on without connecting the power supply to the AC socket. Please report back as to what happens in each scenario.

Go into the BIOS setup and check if your Hard Disk is detected. Did you try opening the laptop casing?

  • Amruth Louis Jul 23, 2009

    Also try resetting your BIOS

  • Amruth Louis Jul 23, 2009

The BIOS setup key is usually F2 or F4. But it varies with the laptop model and the BIOS software. When you turn on your laptop, you'll find the setup key in the first screen that appears in DOS mode. Tap the key until it goes into the BIOS setup. Go to hardware tab and check if your Hard Disk is detected. If it is, then on the Exit tab you'll find Reset BIOS settings. Press enter and reset the BIOS. Let me know what happens.

Is your Hard Disk shown in the BIOS setup?

  • Amruth Louis Jul 23, 2009

If your Hard Disk is not listed in the BIOS setup, you'll need to open the Hard Disk bay at the back of your laptop to make sure the cabling is proper and not loose.

  • Amruth Louis Jul 23, 2009

Is your Hard Disk LED blinking? Also allow your system to be in that state for around 10 minutes and check if your hard disk heats up abnormally. Actually when in that state your hard disk should not be spinning.

Did you check your hard disk?

    I'm waiting for your progress.

HP Compaq NC8430: Laptop does not want to charge battery

Take the battery out, plug in the charger and see if the laptop works. If it works, the battery may be the problem. Check the AC Adapter
Check to make sure the adapter is plugged securely into the wall outlet, connected firmly to the adapter box and to the back of your laptop. Most AC adapters have a little light in them on that rectangular box in the middle of the cord that lights up when it's getting electricity. If that light isn't on, try a different outlet. Check your fuse or circuit breaker box and plug a different device into that outlet to make sure there is power to it. If it still does not light up, your adapter could need replacing. Also check the adapter box for signs of warmth, as it will generate heat when it's plugged in. No heat means no power.

Remove the Battery Sometimes it's as simple as a seated battery. Remove the battery entirely and clean out any dust, lint or hair that may be clogging the connectors and preventing a proper connection. Reseat the battery securely and make sure the little locking pins that hold your battery in place are securely fastened and there is no movement.

Hi. I have a HP Compaq 6820S, Intel Pentium T7250, 2 Gb RAM, 160 Gb HDD, i have a problem, Laptop won't charge battery. I let the laptop in sleep mode, around 7 days, when i come back, battery was 0%,...

try a new battery yet? (brand new fresh)
sleep mode. so you want it to run for 7 days in sleep.
ive no idea how long this laptop runs in sleep
and hibernate is longer.
no idea at all.
you do know that the speed features are programmable
right?
including what chips do and do not go to sleep'
like USB ports, WIFI, and all wake on , features. like Ethernet chip.
and more.
why not just turn it off, and let the battery last longer..
this mode sleep kills batteries faster. way faster.
leave it plugged in all the time to the wall pack.
so the battery never drains unless you need to use it, on battery.

If you remove the battery, does the AC Adapter power the computer? Does the laptop have a barrel type power connector? I have replaced several power connectors for broken center pin. Does wiggling the power connector affect the charging light?

Remove the battery and plug laptop power into the wall (or power strip).
Turn ON laptop without battery.
It should start.
After Windows has settled, put battery back in and let it charge up.

Hope this helps!

BATTERY is charged, but will not work without being plugged in

Your battery is old and worn out, even though it indicates as fully charged. The battery capacity is practically zero. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles.

You need to buy a new battery if you wish to use the laptop without connecting to the mains.
