Question about Garmin Nuvi 660 GPS Receiver

Garmin 650 won't hold charge in car -- same problem

I contacted Garmin and they sent a replacement battery. Problem still persists. I have all but given up using the device. I don't know if the problem is in the male end connection (that goes into the lighter) or the female end on the mounting cradle (in which the unit sits) or the male end on the cord that attaches to the cradle.

All I know is the unit drains quickly when used in car, apparently without receiving any charge from car.

Any suggestions?

Garmin probably sent you another car adapter/charger, not a battery, as the battery is non-user replaceable (requires the unit to be taken apart). It could very well be a problem in the cradle or the cradle connection at the rear of the Nuvi. Like the previous comment, make sure you have +12VDC at the lighter socket. When you have the proper external voltage charging the battery, you should see a "yellow" lightning bolt appear over the green battery bar graph display on the main menu. if you don't see that, the battery isn't being charged. What about with the AC wall charger? Can you charge the unit with that? It would plug into the side mini-USB connector. Do you see the yelllow lightning bolt there? Check power at the 12volt outlet to insure that you power is on at the connection. Try using a 12 volt convertor in the house to check the cord used in the vehicle.

Mine does the same thing, after years of freezing heating and thawing in the car the batteries just won't hold a charge anymore.Getting a replacement battery would cost about $24 plus shipping.

Garmin gps powers off even when fully charged

If you're "recharging" via the car charger - you might want to try charging via USB jack on your computer - or AC adapter (if your GPS shipped with one) for 5 or more hours.

Many Garmin units develop this condition when used strictly in the car / cigar outlet power source. While connected to your computer, you should go to Garmin's website and download, install & run the "webupdater" software. When complete, your Garmin GPS will have the latest firmware and patches to the software (not maps!).

After charging via USB or AC adapter, your GPS should stay on. If your GPS turns on via a slide switch on the top, Slide the switch from OFF and hold in the ON position for 10 seconds before letting go of the switch. This should force a "boot" on the GPS.

If you're unable to get the device to power up, contact Garmin Support to determine if your device is affected by a a recent battery recall or if there are other suggestions they have to solve the problem.

I hope this helps!

This device will not charge. It was being hard wired into the ignition, two wires touched... sparks. Now it won't charge...?

Sparks from a battery operated device is never a good thing. The device might need to go back to Garmin for repair, but before you send it back - try the steps below first.

From Garmin's website:

  1. Make sure you are sliding the power button all the way to the left.
    • If the unit does not respond, it may be that the battery is not charged.
  2. Connect the nuvi to a power source such as the USB cable and your computer.
  3. Reset the device, if the problem persists, by sliding the power button to the left and holding it in that position for 10 seconds
    • This resets the unit and prompts it to power on
If it still won't charge, contact "SUPPORT" at www.garmin.com.

Do not open the nuvi, the garmin site recommends the following method instead:

    • This resets the unit and prompts it to power on
If this fails to solve the problem, contact "SUPPORT" at www.garmin.com.

My Garmin Nuvi 200 won't turn on/fully charged

If it is not charged it will not turn on. If you have a bad battery (which is the case if it won't fully charge) your only choice is to return to Garmin.
