After a lengthy and expensive visit to the Nikon Shop a while back my LS 2000 was returned as non-functional as the day I sent it to them, (the hardware error message "sense ......" I'd given up on it and was just about to purchase a new scanner. Then I found the suggested fix involving the little brass screw in the gear on the bottom front. Technically challenged as I am it only took me 11 minutes to effect the repair. I gave the screw one turn counterclockwise to start. It worked. Not only will it scan but it does so quietly and with autofocus that is precise and autoexposure that is as near to perfect as I can see. Thanks
the problem is that the scan sledge gets stuck if arriving at end of screw. To fix:
Open scanner by unscrewing the four screws in the back - this will allow ypu to slide the sides slighly backwards and then remove. Then take the plastic front of (press the plastic tap on top with screwdriver). You will the see a small brass screw center bottom at the front. Loosen this a few turn and try again (you may have to try a few times)...
Good luck
