Question about Maytag MZD2766GES Side by Side Refrigerator

4 Answers

Freezer cold fridge just cool.

My Maytag side by side is 8 years old. My defrost timer went out and frost was inside the freezer. I replaced the defrost timer and the frost went away. I got a thermometer and the freezer side is around 0. The fridge side won't go below 42. I played with the temperature controls and on one occasion got the fridge into the low 30's, but thought that was too cold and so I made a SLIGHT adjustment and now I'm back to 42 degrees and no matter what I do, I can't get it under 40 (where I want it). I have taken the rerig. side lever cover off and it seems that the airflow into the box isn't strong. I have unplugged and made sure ice isn't blocking the passage. Is there a fan on the refer side? I can't find it. I may have to give up and call out the repairman.

For those who had the control board replaced or are experiencing thefrig side warming while the freezer side continues freezing; Theproblem may (still) be a faulty control board. I fixed the issue byreplacing a $1.00 capacitor on the board. I'm not a techy and it wasn'ttoo difficult to solder. More info on what to do here; DIY Chatroom

I use a pump pressure garden sprayer with hot water to defrost the coils. Gets the job done in 20 minutes and I don't have to worry about defrosting items in the freezer.

Be sure if you get into the refrigerator disconnect the power!

I posted this earlier below for another problem. you need to make sure anytime you fix a problem like this in any refrig you defrost all ice. I found just stting there the ice will remain for 10 hours in the box. Why I don't know but I saw it happen.
The control could still be the problem if you did not replace the whole bboard. There is a way to check the heater with a meter but I don't remember the value. It has to have Ohms if not it is broken.
****************************************************************************************************
I had the same problem and I knew it was the refrigerator. You have to order the control board that controls the fan assy in the freezer. It has an inherent problem with others I see. But don't attempt to change it yourself. There is tricks to it and if you don't do it right you will break more things. I saw the tech broke some tabs and it is stupid way to design something unless you plan to get more business this method.

The control board sits in front of the water filter in the refrigerator. Inside the Temperature control housing cover.

Additionally, you have to take all the frozen food out and defrost manually the fan area and the subsequent ducts to clear it all out. Otherwise, you will have the same problem again. If it breaks and it will. It causes the ice to build up to point you will not get fan movement or airflow. This flow keeps the Icebox from freezing up and causes the air to flow to the refrigerator side.
They make these things so it is harder for DIY to do it.
But they are really simple! At least most of it.
Contrary to popular belief Ice is a good insulator. Once it builds up, no heat transfer takes place because of the inefficiencies it blocks the airflow and etc.

It is my opinion and I stand by it.

I bought many Maytag items and it suppose to have a great reputation. I have now started to look at other providers.

I find these companies are getting cheaper and instead the quality is going down.

So buyer beware not all have across the board quality it depends on the series, the price and the manufacturer.

Oh well another lesson learned.

Here is another problem when using a ice maker unit do not always use the ice crusher. I found that out. The motor that drives the ice crusher is matted with metal to plastic then metal again in the Ice Holder unit.
Guess what, it jams sometimes and it puts great pressure on the ice maker holder unit.

Where the metal meets the plastic is the weakness. It breaks because of in my opinion weak design
The two plastic nibs meeting with the metal motor drive square "U" connector breaks the plastic and eventually you have to get the plastic replaced. I think if I have to order that little part will end up buying the whole Ice holder assembly.
One direction for crushed ice the other direction it turns for solid ice cubes.

I guess I will use the solid Ice cube method until I figure what to do.

Any parts for it replacing the plastic hookup out there?

Good Luck!

THERE IS NO FAN ON THE FRESH FOOD SIDE .THE PROBLEM SOUND AS YOU SAID LIKE AN AIR FLOW PROBLEM. YOU NEED TO REMOVE THE FREEZER SHELVES SO THAT YOU CAN REMOVE THE REAR PANEL THAT COVERS THE COOLING EVAPORATOR. SEE IF THE FAN IS MOVING FAST AND FREE OF FROST BUILD UP .THAT MAY NOT HAVE MELTED YET.IF THE FAN IS SLOW .YOU NEED A NEW FAN, AND THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM. ALSO YOU SHOULD CHECK THE LOW RIGHT HAND CORNER AT THE REAR OF THE FREEZER THERE IS AN AIR PASSAGE THAT HELPS IN THE AIR FLOW,THAT RESULTS IN COLDER TEMPS . YOU WILL NEED TO REMOVE THIS WITH A HAIR DRYER OR HOT WATER USING A GRAVY BASTER , YOU SHOULD ALSO CHECK THE DIFFUSER FOR OPERATION .THIS IS THE PLACE WERE THE AIR ENTERS AT THE TOP LEFT HAND CORNER OF THE FRESH FOOD S IDE. IF IT IS RESTRICTED AT ALL IT WOULD ALSO RESULT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU ARE HAVING.GOOD LUCK ! " YOURS TRUE-LY KEN-DOG "

Maytag msd2641kew fridge side is not cooling its warm . freezer is still cold notice some of the ice look like it was starting to melt a litte. turned freezer up acouple of hours ago stuff is staying...

Sounds like a defrost problem, is there ice on the back wall of the freezer? If so the defrost system has failed. The most common repair is a Part# 67004757 defrost thermostat and adaptive defrost board Part# 67004704. Even with the parts in your hand, you will need to de-ice the freezer to replace the thermostat in the freezer section, then unplug unit to replace the adaptive defrost board located in the controls of the refrigerator section. Normally it can take about an hour to complete.
Good Luck

Kenmore Coldspot freezer too warm

Hi,

Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether. Locating the defrost timer can be tricky....they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise )...replace it.

Hope this helpout......

GE REFRIG. MODEL#TFX30PRYAA. side by side both

It sounds like your defrost control timer is working, but your defrost heater is most likely burnt out. It is a part number WR51X443
and is located behind the back wall inside the freezer. Turning the refrig off for 24 hours helped melt some of the accumulated frost, but not all. You will have to take that back cover off inside the freezer and melt all the frost with a hair blower, replace the defrost heater and reassemble.

GE Side By side doesn't cool and freexer frosts up

Most common problem on GE's is the defrost heater(s) has gone bad. They are a glass tube and when they go bad the tube will have a burnt or black color to it. A good heater will be clear. I bet that is your problem. Seems to be the problem about 90% of the time on GE not defrosting.

Fridge not staying cold

Solo, firt make sure you do not have a build up of frost on the freezer inside panel. This would indicate a defrost problem. Your post states that the cooling problem is intermitant which leads me to believe that the automatic damper is at fault. It could have a build up of ice on it which is causing it to bind, or it could just be going bad. Your model does have the manual defrost timer which could be sticking at times, that is why I suggest checking the back freezer panel for frost buildup. Catriver..post back.
