Unfortunately, the only way to access the tonearm is through the bottom. It's not that difficult, but you should be very careful when placing your turntable upside down to remove the base.

You will have to order a new base, which is not cheap - about $150 - and replacement is a little complex, because you have to take apart your unit from the bottom.

The unit should not be making any sounds like that. It sounds like the timing is off for the gearing underneath the platter. It may be as simple as cleaning the existing grease on the mechanism and re-lubing. The existing grease may have gummed up a bit not allowing the parts to move freely.

Take of the bottom and look at the condition of the grease.

A metal tone arm has a ground wire that connects it to the back of the stereo via the Turntable chassis. If this wire is broken (inside the deck of the turntable) or the ground to the stereo is not done, you can have this issue. No, the ground through the audio connectors is not sufficient.
