I have a DSC-W170 Cyper shot. Love the camera, but recently the pictures have a vertical thin blue line, just to the right of center. What is that??? Is is worth repairing???

Thanks for the quick response. Is this a common problem? Is it more likely caused through normal wear and tear (the camera is just over 1 year old) or is it more likely the result of damage direct to the camera?? I use it every day (do not use a case - I know I should), but just curious???

Hi,
Thin lines are due to shutter speed problem in lens assembly and you need to replace complete lens assembly. Lens assembly (PART NUMBER 178868921) is available in Part Store, click to have part number and price info. Note: DSC-W150 & DSC-W170 have same Lens.
Now you can decide to get it repaired or not.
Thanks.

    Hi again,
It is not common problem with this model but electronic stuff can be bad any time without any notice.
I do not see the problem is caused by normal or frequent use of camera as its made for use and can be used daily.
Dust cover is good thing to protect camera and I would recommend it but it has no affect on subject problem in camera that is thin blue vertical lines.
Here I would suggest, if you are handy with electronic stuff repair and comfortable with it, apart camera carefully and unplug / replug back in two flexible wires of lens assembly coming in main board. I hope that can solve thin lines problem too because connectors might need to reinserted properly for better connection.
    Thanks.

Ca I shot images with the date inserted on DSC W170?

Hi.

Althought you cannot directly shot images with the date printed on top, the date is held in image attributes for each single file taken with your camera.

You can print out the image with dates, or order them in date order using the Picture Motion Browser software originally provided with the camera.
You can also ask that the pictures are printed with file date if you ask a print at a local shop.

Motion Browser software is explained at page 96 of the manual:http://pdf.crse.com/manuals/3294896121.pdf

How do you use the self timer on a sony dscw170?

In the manual on page 27, it says press the control button "down" arrow
and on the screen a circle with a line from the center going to the upper left of the circle indicates Self Timer. Depress the Control Button until the desired mode is selected. The selections are No indicator: not using self timer, the circle with a 10 to the right : 10 second delay, the circle with a 2 to the right of the circle: 2 second delay. The shutter is released and either 2 seconds or 10 seconds later the camera takes a picture.

Sounds like the same stuck zoom lens gear problem I had with the W-100.  Turn it top down and give it a sharp, not-too-hard ray on a rug or a soft covered book.  Good luck.
