you should try to dopen it up, locate the cmos battery, plug it out for about 30 minutes and put it back then test if bios has been cleared. if not, try to google and find out backdoor bios passwords for your model. hope this helps.

IBM R40 HOW ICAN UNLOCK THE PASSWORD

Hi,

This is only possible is you are using Windows XP. If your operating system is windows Xp, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn on your laptop and allow it get to the stage where is will ask for user/log password
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Del your keyboard.
  3. A user name and password prompt will pop up.
  4. On the user name type in "administrator
  5. On the password, type in "administrator"
  6. and you windows will open, go to control panel from there to change the password.
That's all. In other words, the user name and password is administrator.

But in the case of windows Vista, you will have to re-run windows operating system, because vista security is very tight and its difficult to break into its password.

Take care

Take Took Long Entering Bios Setup

You should get some diagnostic tools (like Hiren's BootCD, PC DR., or Microscope) and run a system scan, paying specific attention to the RAM and the Hard Drive, but this sounds more like a Hard Drive issue than a RAM issue, but do both just to make sure.

My ibm thinkpad r40e is asking for CMOS password what to do

You will have to enter the bios and reset the date and time, but you might need a new cmos battery.

Re the cmos password, you should remove it, but will have to know what it is. This can also be done while you are in the bios.

Cmos password for ibm r40

You will have to remember it. IBM puts a security chip on the motherboard, the bios password is burned into this, and there is no way around it. There are a few places that will replace the chip, but they are very expensive. The only other way is to replace the motherboard. I've found that replacing the motherboard is cheaper than having the chip replaced, so, if possible, remember the password.
