CD/DVD drives will always show 0 bytes if there is no media present.
You will need extra software in order to burn DVD such as Roxio, Nero. I beleive the LG burners show come with software, you will need to install it in, and run it to burn DVDs.
Nero does offer a free version that will burn DVDs http://www.nero.com/ena/downloads-nero9-free.php

On acer aspire 5520g the dvd rw spins the dvd but bio's says its unplugged and it won't read the dvd's

Try downloading a driver from the net, Or install DVD software such as Roxio or Sonic Cine Player. Does it show in hardware as a CD Rom or DVD/RW ? If it shows as a CD the driver is the problem.

check in "device manager" for any hazard warning signs which indicate a problem with either the device or its driver's....to check, go to desktop, right click on "my computer" select properties, hardware tab, click "device manager" and check the list for those devices you mention. From here you can also troubleshoot and update driver if required.
