Nope, turn off all gas to the heater. Remove the enclosure containing the burner. Disconnect both the gas line and the thermocouple line from the gas valve and pull out the whole burner assembly. Take a pair of needle nose plyers and remove the thermocouple from the pilot assembly. Install the new one and reverse the removal procedures to put it all back together. Check to make sure there is no gas leaks and this is important, The nut to turn off the burner tube from the gas valve is reverse threads. Righty to turn off, Leftie to tighten.

Are you holding the pilot button in long enough. Sometimes it takes a long time for the thermocouple to open. Or you need a new thermocouple, there cheap and easy to replace.

My whirlpool 50 gal natural gas water heater wont stay lit?

Are you sure the pilot is heating up the thermocouple? Make sure the flame is close enough to the thermocouple. Also make sure the thermocouple is seated properly in control valve. Try unscrewing and resetting it back into place.

I have an old whirlpool gas water heater and the pilot will not stay lit.

Suspects include bad thermocouple, thermocouple slipped down and not in pilot flame, dirty combustion parts and pilot tube, dirty air intake, backdraft caused by other vent fans pulling air down water heater vent, water dripping down vent because of poor venting, air in gas line, low gas pressure, bad gas control valve, hot attic environment, tight house not allowing enough air:

My reliance sta-kleen 502 gas water heaters' pilot will not lihgt. can some one give me an idea what to do.

Reliance is Rheem
Replace thermocouple is best start point.
Example Whirlpool manual shows general replacement steps on page 22:
Buy thermocouple at hardware or home center. measure length before going to store.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Whirlpool-6510397.pdf

Utube videos show how to replace thermocouple

Many things can affect pilot:
Low gas pressure, Water or air or debris in the gas control valve, High-heat event causing ECO to trip requiring new gas control valve, burner and tubes needing clean-out, FV sensor tripped, loose or bad thermocouple.
Manual above shows general steps for doing some of these things, but service technician is probably best choice if thermocouple does not fix problem.

Gas water heaters require periodic maintenance.
If repairs cost more than $330, then buy new gas water heater and install yourself.
Use the old one for a solar collector.

My hot waterheater will light but when i release the reset button after over a minute the pilot light goes out. what do i do

There is a small probe with its tip in the pilot flame called a thermocouple,
this is a flame failure device and shuts off the pilot in the event the flame goes out due to wind water or no gas, this device can become bunrt out usually after many years of use and can normally be replaced, you can purchase a universal thermocouple from most gas appliance retailers

I have a 40 gal. Whirlpool Water Heater and the pilot light will not stay on. I light it, but it will not hold (stay on) The heater was purchased in Aug 2003. Model No. FG1F4040SNOV. Any ideas?

The thermocouple has gone bad.
You will need to replace it. The video at the link below is a good overall view.
I would use soapy water for the leak test mixed at about 90 to10 (soap to water.
Also when you have the assembly removed clean the area with a vacuum and clean the assembly also.

Take the old thermocouple out before you go the the store to replace it as the do come in different sizes/lengths

Whirlpool water heater pilot light does not stay lite

I have a Lowe's Whirlpool water heater. I've experienced the same problems as I've seen described here. My pilot light started going out several times a day. It was not such a big deal, the tank is well insulated so the water would stay warm - I'd just re-light the pilot before going to bed and before going to work. That worked well for about three days, but the problem got progressively worse until it just would not light at all. I replaced the thermocouple with a Honeywell universal thermocouple that I got at Home Depot - that did not solve the problem. I'm very handy, so I decided instead of going through warranty service and having to wait three or four days for replacement parts, I'd buy a new gas valve at Lowes and try that. It cost $54.00 and it worked. By the way, I put the original thermocouple back in and the pilot light stays lit - it was definitely the gas valve and not the thermocouple in my case. It was a real pain to do since I had to drain the tank, but it only took about three hours total. From what I've read, these things last anywhere between six months and two years. That's ridiculous, but at least I have hot water now. If you are reading this because you are considering purchasing a Lowes hot water heater, DON'T!!! I started my search for a replacement gas valve at Home Depot, but they don't stock them. Lowes had 8 on the shelf. That tells you something right there - the water heaters Home Depot stocks don't need to have the gas valves replaced before the tank wears out - there's no demand for the valves so Home Depot doesn't stock them. Lowes probably sells 8 of them a week - all the boxes were shiny and new, not dirty and dusty like some items get when they sit around in home improvement stores.
