    hi, I got WD passport external drive 160 GB. I seldom use it for running or opening a file. I have valuable data inside memorable pictures of my family and kids rowing up. But when i open it up, it can no longer be detected. Lights on but only ticking sound maybe its a clock ticking inside. When i plugged it a prompt appeared says the hardware is not installed and sort of corruption and now it cannot be accessed or detected by my laptop. can anyone help on how to repair this or maybe just recover my data? Thanks...

Your western digital passport 320GB still on the process of recieving and downloading files. Maybe at that time you disconnected the 320GB. In order to get alive this 320GB hdd, you need to open the enclosure and remove the SATA HDD and connect that to any desktop computer with has a SATA connection. You may need to reformat the hdd in order to use , because the files was corrupted already.

I have WD 320 external hard disk, it was working good , before 2 days its stop working, my computer can detect it but the size is zero and i can find my data

If it is detecting it as size zero the drive is damaged.

To be sure you can run WD's Data Lifeguard diagnostic http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3&lang=en

But it's probably the case you will need data recovery help. This guy does it remotely and works for donations. http://FreeDataRecovery.us

Any external disk-drive as small as 80GB is probably "out-of-warranty" -- it's likely that the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

You have two options, not mutually exclusive:
* exercise the Western Digital "Customer Loyalty" program -- find the serial-number of your Passport, and access WD's web-site to buy a new Passport, citing the old serial-number to qualify for a significant discount on your purchase;
* open the enclosure, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and connect it to the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "frankenstein" it, creating a "new" external storage-device.

Doesnt register and all the lights stay

Does it work after you change the USB cable?
If so, then your USB cable is the problem.

Does it work on some "other" computer?
If so, then your computer is the problem.

Does it work it _any_ USB port in your computer?

Failing that, disassemble the casing, to find:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive itself.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" drive to a desktop computer, to see if the disk-drive can be detected.
If not, then the disk-drive has "died".
Buy a new disk-drive, and connect it to that USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "revive" your external unit.

Read the serial-number from the disk-drive, and access Western Digital's web-site, and enter the number in the "check warranty" section, to see if your unit is still under warranty, i.e., a free replacement.

If not under warranty, then W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty Program" -- buy a new External Hard-Drive from their web-site, and they will give you about a 20% discount from their "retail" price.

My computer does not recognize my WD external drive

You've tried different USB cables; so, that cannot be the problem.

You've tried connecting to different computers; so, the problem is _not_ your computer.

What's left is "inside" the case:
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter,
* the disk-drive.

Open the case, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive to some computer.
If it is detected, then the USB-to-disk-drive adapter that has failed.
If it not detected, then the disk-drive itself has failed.

FInd the serial-number on the Western Digital disk-drive, and enter it onto Western Digital's web-site, on the "check-warranty" page. If it's older than 3 years, the warranty probably has expired, unless you were "lucky" and got a 5-year warranty.

Western Digital has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- just buy a new Passport through their web-site, and cite the serial-number, and you'll get a significant discount on _their_ price (could be higher than your local retail computer-store) for a new (probably larger) Passport.

My westerndigital passport size hard disk of size 320gb when connected to system at starting 2 to 3 beep sounds i am hearing and the hard disk is not detecting what to do? naresh

Either the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the casing has failed,
or your USB port has failed,
or the disk-drive inside the casing has failed.

Try a different USB port. Try a different computer.

Disassemble the casing, and remove the disk-drive.
Temporarily attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer,
and see if the drive is detected, and if the files are OK.

If all else fails, and the Passport is still under warranty, exercise the warranty.

My external hard disc is not detected by pc and some strange tick

This is never a good sign!! Hard drives only 'tick' when they are bad, or going bad. Some popular techniques for attempting to temporarily fix the drive include freezing it for several hours before trying again, standing the drive on it's thin edge, or lightly tapping it with a SMALL hammer or the **** end of a screwdriver as you power it on. Some have also had success (myself included) removing the controller circuit board and replacing it with the controller of an identical drive, preferably from a drive from the same lot as your broken drive. However I don't recommend this to most people, it is an advanced technique and easy to screw up! Also not likely the problem if the drive is clicking.

If you can get it to work again this way, copy your data from it IMMEDIATELY then recycle the drive and never use it again!

A final option would be to send the drive to a data recovery specialist, but be forewarned this can be VERY expensive.
