OK, I found the answer...there was a problem with the updated Windows service pack. I had to uninstall all applications(even in recycle bin) of all previous service packs including the new service pack 3. Then, went to Windows update and reinstalled the service pack 3 only and after installation, my ipod came to life! It was beautiful....Must be a compliant problem with the packs...I don't know!

SOURCE: ipod shuffle 2nd gen. shuts down my pc when plugged in via usb

rokk, read all of this before trying it. If you are using WinXP or Vista they have a built in system protection that if something comes in and is recognized as a physical threat to the system it will shut it down. Check your settings. You may have picked up a corrupt file. Watch out for .P1 and files that don't remove from the player. They will lock the player and your PC.
Not a full solution but I hope it sends you in the right direction. If you are running Norton shut it down then <with care turn off> firewall, etc, one at a time. If its a bug once you restart Norton it should grab it. If in doubt, don't.

SOURCE: my ipod shuffle (2nd gen)

If you are using a USB port that has charged the device in the past and works for other devices, and the shuffle is tight in its dock, all you can do it send the shuffle to Apple for a new battery. It is not user serviceable--next to impossible to disassemble without destroying it.

SOURCE: Ipod shuffle (2nd gen) completely dead

you are still under warranty...take it to the sony apple store...they will fix it /replace it or tell you there is cost if it not the battery (note do not tell them you charged overnight, and for the future do chage any gadgets more than 3-4 hrs) when you do charge over night you are actually shorten the battery life span or overcharge....so as soon as you come home from school, work, whatever cell/ipod or any other device needs to be charge...charge it now and unplug before you go to bed....

2nd gen ipod shuffle non-responsive

Step 1:
Like all electronic devices, iPods sometimes freeze and become unresponsive. Sometimes iPods lock up when they're dropped on the ground or come in contact with water, but less destructive accidents may also cause them to stop working. All versions of the iPod have a way to reset their hardware should they stop playing music or refuse to turn off.

Check the "Hold" switch on the top case of your iPod to be sure it isn't activated. An iPod will appear frozen and unresponsive if this feature is activated. A lock symbol will appear on your iPod's screen if it is in Hold mode. Switch the "Hold" button on and off once. Place one finger on the "Menu" button and another on the center button. Press both buttons at the same time and hold them for up to 8 seconds. Release the "Menu" and center buttons once the Apple logo appears on your iPod's screen. Try releasing the buttons and pressing and holding them a second time if the logo does not appear, as it can sometimes take several tries to reset a severely frozen iPod. Press and hold the top button and the center "Home" button on a frozen and unresponsive iPod touch to reset it. Hold the buttons for at least 10 seconds and wait for the Apple logo to appear on the screen, then release the buttons. Connect your iPod to its powerblock or a computer if it is still frozen. Wait 5 minutes and then try to reset it. Sometimes an iPod can appear frozen when its battery runs out and just needs a few minutes of power to start working again.

I have a iPod shuffle 2nd gen. But haven't used for a long time. Now its not switching on. What to do?? :(

Batteries--especially rechargeable ones--do not hold their charge forever. The batteries power naturally drains, even if you don't use them. Just recharge your ipod, and it should work fine.
