I think I have a bad hard drive on my Acer model #BL50. I can't get past the acer logo screen. Help! What do I do?

If you have a Windows disk, put it in the CD and see if you can boot from that. You didn't say what operating system you have, but you should be able to boot from a CD/DVD if the system is working properly.
Once you boot it, you'll need to get to the command prompt (varies according to your operating system) and see if you can see drive C:
You should also, on startup, press the key that puts you into setup (normally F2). You can then look at the system devices and see if it reports that there is a hard drive. If it fails the tests, above, then your hard drive is probably bad.

When checking this, I always see if I can get to the drive by booting from a CD/DVD first.

There are actually a few things you can do for a dinosaur laptop (other than waiting for the asteroid to appear in the sky). Here are my top three suggestions:

  1. Squeeze in as much RAM as possible. If you have a spare SIMM slot, put in the largest-capacity module you can find. You may have to throw away what's already in there--likely a 16MB module--and replace it with a 32MB or 64MB one. Memory was so expensive five years ago that vendors often skimped on it, but now that prices have plummeted, you should pack in as much as possible. (You may also look around for a chip doubler--a SIMM two-for that lets you put a pair of chips where there's only room for a single.)

  2. Get a huge, honking hard drive. You should be able to dig up a compatible 10GB or 20GB drive. What's great is that it'll run at 4,200rpm (compared to the 3,600rpm drive you currently have), which will result in better performance. Save all your precious data, swap the old drive out for the new, and fire it up (crossing your fingers that the OS sees the new drive). Take note: You'll have to preload an operating system onto the new drive or load it on the fly.

  3. Accelerate. You'll want to configure Windows to run your hard disk and graphics card at their maximum speeds.
  • Hard drive: Go to the device manager, select the drive letter, and pick the Settings tab. Check DMA for best performance. For Windows 2000, go into the hard drive's properties, open Disk Properties, and check Write Cache Enabled.

  • Graphics card: On your desktop, right-click and select Properties. Select the Advanced tab, then click the Performance tab. Push the slider all the way to the right.

Hi there , My Acer Veriton has no sound card and no facility for one as far as I can see. Is it possible to use a USB external type. And if so how would that work? Rudy, from Australia

USB sound cards work quite well, will your PC support USB2? I have never seen a pc without a sound card? No PCI slots?

USB sound cards have their own internal workings not needed by the PC so it should work just fine. Now if they could just make a USB video driver card :)

I just got my acer aspire one with Linpus Linux OS I am not used to Linux so I changed my OS to Windows. After changing my OS, the wifi connection is lost and so with the audio. help me restore them....

Hey,

the drivers for all acer laptops are available at this page
http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html

from the aspire list, select the aspire one that matches your model, its probably on the bottom or on the top, look around the laptop, the drivers are all at the website.

You will need atleast Wireless drivers and audio drivers, maybe more.

Its all there.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
Ekse

Wi-Fi drivers for Acer Aspire 4710Z for linux

The drivers for Windows can be used if no specific Linux drivers exist. There's a program within Linux called NDisWrapper which is designed to use the drivers provided for Windows XP in Linux. Refer to your particular distribution of Linux for the details on how to set up NDisWrapper from within your distribution (I've only done it in Ubuntu so have no experience of other distros)
