Only if you want to lose all your data, if you just bought this earlier return it exchange for another one, this is kind of a bad sign of hard drive health. Did you bump it or drop it? if you cant or dont want to swap it out i'd suggest shutting down your computer and powering down the drive, then plugging it all back in and starting it up, you'd be amazed how often that fixes issues with new products. If you're ok with starting from scratch you can certainly reformat to attempt to fix a formatting issue but it will erase all data on the drive.

Hope that helps, Good luck

Yes there are certain options for recovering data from a damages or unstable hard drive, you can try a number of programs, a comparison is listed here
    http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2008...
General instructions go as follows, ignore the window that says 'format before using' install program of your choice, follow instructions, select damaged hard drive as data recovery source, select an empty folder on ANOTHER drive {recovery to the same drive can cause data loss} as the place to dump your backup.

Before trying that semi-extreme option, try opening my computer, right clicking the damaged drive and selecting 'properties', then 'error check', then 'check now', check both boxes, press scan,it will tell you it cant while the drive is in use, select schedule boot time scan, press ok, restart your comp and wait while a rather long scan for drive errors tries to fix the problem.

If that wont work try to back things up a slightly easier way by using a program called 'synchronize it',
    http://www.grigsoft.com/files.htm
Basically the same process as backing up with the other programs but more organized, if the drive is very unstable expect freezes and the possible need to restart and try another option.

As a final note, don't pay for any of this software, there are many free programs that do these things, investigate a little to find other options if the ones i listed are not right for you. If none of this works many local companies will do data back ups for you for reasonable prices.

If you press yes you have the risk of losing all of the information on the drive.

My 1tb elements external drive is not recognised on windows 7

I'm guessing the HDD needs to be reformatted. To reformat... ALERT THIS WILL ERASE EVERYTHING ON YOUR HARD DRIVE. if there is import information that is not backed up, back it up on a computer that recognizes the drive.
Go to control panel in the start menu, then to system and security, then Administrative tools, then computer management, then storage, Disk management,

This will list all storage devices that are connected to the computer. Based on the names you should be able to tell which one is the western digital. Right click, format and follow the formatting wizard. Format the drive as NTFS. Allocate all available space to 1 NTFS partition unless you would like multiple partitions.

If you format it for a PC, both the MAC and PC should be able to read it.
If not, there is a product called MACDrive that you can put on your PC that will allow you to read MAC formatted disks on your PC.

I have the 1.5 TB Western Digital my book--I did the proper steps to reformat it to have it work with my macbook. My playstation 3 does not recognize that anything is plugged in when I hook it up with...

PS3 can recognize only hard disks that are formatted on FAT32. Since now the disk is formatted to HFS (a format only Mac's are using) you can't make it work. Save all the files on it and reformat it to FAT, then put back the files and only then connect it to the PS3.

Fat32 has never been the safest format to use with windows xp. Try using a NTFS formatter or even the windows bootable disc would work.

Go to add new hardware wizard. This may not come with a disk if you do have a disk it will ask you to put disk in. If you do not find it there go to the HCL directory of the western digital website for installation directions.

My Book 1Tb will not let me put movies on it

I know exactly what your problem is. You are trying to add a file bigger than 4 GB on a fat32 external hard drive. You simply cant put something that big in there without breaking it into smaller bits. You could easily add a bunch of small files just not huge files bigger than 4GB.
Your solution would be to reformat your WD external drive to a ntfs. That can be done as easy as right clicking your external drive through my computer and highlighting "reformat". Good luck and I hope you dont forget this little thing about computers..sometimes when you get a good deal on pc hardware its for a reason :)
this is good for all hard drives including western digital
