SRS Rite pool heater turns on by itself when pump is running. How do I prevent this from continuing?

Pool heaters are wired through the pump so that they don't turn on when the water is not moving. But that doesn't mean they have to run all the time the pump does.

The heater should have its own On-Off switch. Find that and turn it off. It may be hidden under a cover to protect it from the rain.

It also should have a thermostat. Find that also and set for a comfortable temperature. It may take some fiddling because the water will be hotter by the jets than the rest of the pool until it circulates and stabilizes at a uniform temperature.

You should be able to find both the On-Off switch and Thermostat near the removable panel that allows access to the guts of the heater. Should also be a wiring diagram inside the panel to assist in finding the controls.

On the off chance that someone (previous owner?) bypassed the controlls you may have to rewire the heater so that they work as originally intended, or install a new switch between the pump and heater.

Good luck!

Can I wire my heater to my pool pump timer. I want power to the heater only when my pump is running.

If your heater is operating properly, it will not heat if your pump is not running. But you can connect it to your timer also. How you do it will depend on what type of time you have, Which model of heater you have. If you have your manual, you can find wiring examples for your heater.
