Please make sure the machine is set for auto-receive in machine set up and make sure the phone cord is plugged into the line jack on the machine. If this machine is not on a dedicated phone line the machine (rings) should be set to pick up before the answering machine does.

when you installed did you get the fax setup wizard during the installation. If not, you can get it by opening hp solution center-> settings-> fax settings-> fax setup wizard.
You can have the HP solution center icon in the desktop or try with hp Director.

if not you can look at the
hard-copy user guide walks you through all the setup variations, depending on what type of line you have, what components (answering machine, for example), and how you want to handle incoming calls and faxes.

Two issues, you can go to the HP site and download the latest printer driver for that model:

Or check what version of windows you are running. Click on START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM.

It should tell you on the first page your OS and what patch it is at.

Install the drivers/software for Vista on the Vista machine. Here is the link for drivers and software for Vista. Just scroll down and choose your version of Vista. Will then give you a list of whst they have. They've goot what you need. If you need everything I'd pick the full diver/software packagr. You should have a "setup" button. Press that and go to "fax" set up. You can select your options from there. Your options should include the ability to receive a receipt for all transmissions, or none, or just for failed transmissions. Also, you mentioned you "inherited" the machine. I'd suggest going to hp's website to update the software/drivers. The site is www.hp.com.

This is easy enough - ring HP and tell them to come and replace it. If the machine is less than 30 days old (i believe) you are entitled to class it as DOA and receive a new machine rather than a fix. The solid colour is indicative of a process engine/formatter fault
