Question about GE Cooktops

Open Question

I need to repalce the infinite switch on my GE JP350 cook top

My renter broke and removed the infinite switch (right front) on my GE JP350 electric cook top. I bought a GE replacement part WB24T10119 and the enclosed typical wire color chart does not match the wires in my cook top. My cook top has red, black, blue, and purple with in-line connectors and a single purple wire. The enclosed documentation with the part list red, black, yellow and the fourth and fifth line as blue, brown, yellow, or Orange. Please advise how to connect the switch.

SOURCE: 3 wire cook top to a 4 wire outlet

Older 3 wire connectors where Wht=Neutral Ground Return, Red=One Phase Hot, Blk=Second Phase Hot, of 220VAC stove connections.

Newer Electrical code standard has a forth wire that is bare copper for a separate safety ground return.
I suggest you but a 4 wire pig tail cable for your stove top, available at Depot or Lowes, and connect 3 wires of this 4 wire cable just like the 3 wires are now connected. The 4th bare copper safety is attached to any metal part of the stove. Find a screw you can loosen to wrap it around and tighten.

SOURCE: infinite switch has failed twice in the last 6

This is usually the infinite switch has failed. They are easy to check and inexpensive. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that will walk you thru testing this. It may be a different model but the testing will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations for your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

Hi marilynmcdon,

You can do it yourself. These cook tops are not glued to the granite at all (Or is not supposed to be). Simply lift is up slowly, start from the side, and lift it slowly. If done carefully you won't damage anything.

Hope this helps

Hi sounds like you have a busted switch assembly, this is very much fixable the part is around $50, but you would need to remove the top of the stove which requires pulling the unit from the counter, this is slightly more involved, but definitely doable i would also change the knob. A more accurate name would be infinite switch.

Burner only cooks on high heat.

You need the switch for that burner. The contacts inside are stuck together. You will need to pull the unit and separate the glass from the lower body to access it. To get the right switch you need full model and serial number located on a plate at the bottom of the unit.

Your ability to perform this is dependent on how mechanical you are. The Whole unit must be removed from the counter opening and the base unscrewed from the glass, remove knobs before disassembling. For someone mechanical this is not difficult. De-energize whole unit first.

Once the two pieces are separated the remainder is mechanically easier. Disassemble the box on right containing the switches and replace the correct one. Reverse the process for reassembly. Good Luck

GE Profile JP350 cooktop stopped working

OK, i think the problem took care of itself. definitely got water down in the infinite switch for the lower right burner. let it dry 12 hours and reset the breaker, now works fine. but, i know if i do that again, or if it happens randomly, i will have to replace the switch and seals (available at repairclinic.com)
to do that, you have to remove the cooktop (screwed down by a strap in the back to the back wall of the cabinet) remove the sheetmetal to access the switches and replace. just keep the wiring straight, and ALWAYS replace the seals, they leak over time.

Both burners turn on when only one is needed

I just had the same problem- when I replaced the whole cartridge.
I repalced the infinite switch- do the one that gets the hottest- or do both.
It is easy to do- just write down the wiring diagram - make sure all power is off- cost of new switch was about $37.00
This solved the problem- however make sure to check the sizng on the new switch shaft as my old knob would not fit properly on the shaft of the new switch.
good luck
