Question about Cerwin Vega CLS-12 Main / Stereo Speaker

1 Answer

Cerwin Vega D9-E Speakers. Bad crossovers...I think. Fixable?

Got some new CV's with issues. Bought them used, and crossovers appear to be bad. Probably got a bit overcooked by previous owner.
Are the crossovers fixable, or are they pretty much to be tossed and start looking to buy some? The speakers are Cerwin Vega D9-E. I entered CLS-12 because mine were not on the list.

There is a white, rectangular rart on one crossover that does definitely look burnt. Not sure what's up with the other crossover, as it looks ok, but could have other issues. The high freq pot does not work, but I'll deox it and see if it comes to life. A check for continuity with a meter is about as far as my expertise goes.
    What do you think (gut)?
    Thanks!

    Sorry...
Also, one of the boards has a cap that looks a little 'jelly jar-ed' or bulged, but not that much. No burnt shellac over coil.
Q...When 'ohming the crossover out, how do i go about it? Just check each component for continuity?
    Thanks!

Hi. Was waiting for a reply. Q....Is a multimeter what I use here? What setting?
    Thanks.

if you had the microhenry value of the coil in the crossover filter you could buy it at a tv repair place or electronics supply. Have you ohmed the crossover out with a meter? Does the shellac over the coil look burnt? How about the capacitor?

Crossovers are made with wire coils, electrolytic capacitors and resistors.
Capacitors may get leaky or blown with time and heavy use, and are quite easy to find, just be sure to use the same polarity, capacity and voltage rating and to respect the polarity if it's a polarized capacitor.
There may also be a burnt out resistor or a coil. Resistors can be obtained and replaced (same resistance and wattage) and wire coils can be rewound (same amount of wire of the same wire gauge).

Another possibility is a partially damaged wire on the speaker itself. This is the braided curl wire that goes from the speaker membrane to the cable connection lugs on the speaker armature, and it may be damaged at the membrane side or the lug side.
It usually happens from what you call "overcooking".
To repair this it will require some soldering skills, but it's a bit hard to solder that type of wire, as it tends to oxydize and is difficult to clean prior to soldering, it may be difficult to access it, depending on the speaker structure(an alternative to this is to replace the speaker itself).

There may be some physical damage to the membranes if the sound is present but is of a bad quality (a slightly damaged membrane may be repaired using some rubber glue, but it will never return the speaker to the original condition).

These are just some suggestions, hope they can help you get closer to a solution.

Replacement woofers for Cerwin Vega HED 3way 12. Can I use woofers from the LS Series?

Absolutely, as long as they are the same impedance.
If you are unsure, use an ohmmeter to check the static impedance of the replacement speakers, and be sure that it is with in 2-3 ohms of the listed impedance of the speakers you are replacing (otherwise, your crossover points will be wrong).

Multi channel Av reciever model STR-DH540

I went with Cerwin Vega for my speakers and they have been great. You can find them at Best Buy I believe or even order over Amazon.com (shipping is always high). Be careful buying over eBay unless they are like new or new--you don't know how they've been used or abused in that case. I have 4 smaller bookshelf speakers for the surround and back surround, an LW12 subwoofer, and some 10" Cerwin Vega L9 units for the front. I also bought a nice CV center channel speaker--went a big bigger and better on that unit as it plays the voices on 5.1 and 7.1 surround.

Where can i find an amplifier for a cerwin vega hts 12a

Subwoofer Plate Amplifiers

What you need is a plate amplifier. You'll get more bang for the buck by using an after market one. They are simple to replace. Dayton is a popular brand. They use an active variable crossover .

Could be a bad amp or blown speaker. If you have a meter you can test the speakers.

I own a CERWIN-VEGA V-12S 12" Front Firing V

You may have only messed up the crossover circuit. Try changing the crossover frequency and see if hte behavior changes. If so, then the parts cost should be minimal. If the behaviorr remains the same, there will need to be more investigation done internally. This is not a problem that is likely to be easily resolved remotely. Can you update this with your location? I may be able to provide a recommendation for a service shop.

No sound coming out of speakers on my cerwin vega

spurdoggg,
It will be easy to pin point the problem. If your satellite speakers have been connect through the sub's in and output speaker connectors, disconnect them and connect them directly to the source of sound. If the speakers work its the crossover inside the sub enclosure. If the speakers do not work the speakers are blown.

Replacement drivers for home speakers are only sold directly from Cerwin Vega. If you can find one online, it will not be authentic CV.

Cerwin Vega ve-28s subwoofer and new Cervin Vega 2-way satellites

I bought my VE-28s and it did exactly that crackled, cerwin replaced part in amp but few months later problem persisted. they then replaced entire amp assembly and its been fine. i really push it to and its been fine. to test it, unplug the connection from amp/ reciever and see if it persists. if so its the sub, if not its the amp/ reciever. dont dump it, these subs really crank and can put out some deep loud bass.
