Question about Poulan Pro 42CC 2 Cycle Chainsaw, 18"

1 Answer

Starts ok when cold. acts like it's out of fuel when hot.

Craftman/pullan 18" 42 cc chain saw model # 358-3650802. this saw seems to start and run ok when cold. after running hard for apx 20 minutes or so and shutting down for refueling/oil and let saw cool down for 10-15 minutes the saw does not want to start. It acts like it is out of fuel or possibly a vapor locking situation. I am cutting in about 80 degree weather. I have checked the air filter, its clean. I have checked the spark plug and it is a mocha tan color on the tip. I do not have a manual for this saw but I have automotive mechanic experience just not much experience with small engines. I could sure use some advise/ideas on this matter.
Thanks very much

Clean or change the sparkplug. Also make sure you have fresh gas and the proper fuel mix.

What would cause a poulan chain saw to quit running after about ten minutes of cutting

The only temperature sensitive part I can think of is the condenser. In most saws it is under the flywheel with the points. Some newer saws have an electronic ignition module. If that is the case the module must be replaced.

Sounds like the bar is to tight. There should be a cover and 2 studs, loosen the nuts and then look for an adjusting screw at the back of the bar and back it off.The chain should have about 1/8 slack when pulled from the bottom of the bar.A tight chain will heat the bar and turn it blue close to the chain guide.A new bar will be required. Thank you for using FixYa .

Hi Chris,
Check the air filter is clean and the choke plate is working ok.
Ensure the chain is sharp.
Check the chain isn't damaged and dragging in the guide bar.
A blocked muffler/silencer can cause loss of power.
Try screwing the "H" mixture adjustment screw in with the engine running at full power to reduce the richness of the mixture. Do this 1/4 turn at a time. Ensure you count the number of turns so you can get back to where you started.

Check to see if you have the chain oriented correctly - it is east to put them on backward without realizing it. Th3e teeth should point forward, with the anti - kickback lug in front of the tooth. Let me know if this helps!!

I have a model 435 Husky that had the same hard-to-start problem--warranty service replaced the carburetor and it seems to work ok now. The chain that continues to turn can be fixed by turning the idle-speed screw (not the H or L jet screws) CCW a small amount until it can be accelerated then dropped back to idle to quit driving the chain. Hope this helps!

it starts from cold because the auto choke is on ,allowing a richer mixture ,try removing the sender unit in the tank and seeing if the connection from the pump to the outlet connection is ok or leaking causing a loss of fuel pressure

Husqvarna chain saw starts and runs for 20 minutes then stops.

two things could be happening.......first is vapor lock......make sure you breather tube is clear and working........next is ....it could have a bad ignition coil on it.....after the coil gets hot the spark can become irratic or just not work any more.....
