Cannot access western digital 120gb hard drive

Hi,

I am having a problem with my western digital 120GB hard drive. I switched it on as usual, the disc spins OK, I hear a beep, beep to signal it is about to open up, but nothing happens. I can hear the drive still spinning but nothing? I have tried a new USB lead, no luck, and I have also tried it on my laptop to check it is not my PC. Still nothing. I have ALL of my MP3 and Photograph files on this hard drive and I am panicking I will not be able to retrieve them again? Can you help?

Thanks for that but I have tried the disk management but the external hard drive doesn't appear on the menu. I can hear a fan or a disc still spinning inside the case, weird? can anyone help?

Please use Computer Management by clicking Start> Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management.

If your harddrive appear maybe you need to assigned drive letter then apply and right click then explore.

SOURCE: Cannot access western digital 120gb hard drive

I have heard about WD portables doing this ...I believe the problem is that the read head (like a record player stylus) gets "stuck" and doesn't begin scanning the index table at the beginning of the drive, thereby not showing any drive contents.

Nutshell version...if you've tried the same drive on 2 different machines, the drive is dead. Your best bet: contact WD and let them know. They are (in all the years I've dealt with them) VERY good about supporting their products, even sometimes after they've gone out of warranty.

hope this helps ;)

I'm going to say that the drive is mislabeled. I've ran into this before with Western Digital two or three times, and quite a few times with various memory chips. Contact WD support, explain the problem, and their usually pretty good about getting the right one to you.
