Front transmission seal keeps leaking replaced 3 times 03 vw beetle 2.0 what else can be wrong

  • Bill Boyd Feb 21, 2017

it is also possible that you are not installing the transmission correctly
input shaft seals are easily damaged when putting the transmission into the torque converter
the correct method is to put the torque converter on the shaft first , the install the assembly onto the engine, flex plate while holding the converter in place

Most commonly the Torque Converter where the seal rides has a grove worn it, check that first, also check for play in the shaft input shaft bearing..

I have a 2000 beetle turbo and just notices it is leaking oil from around the plug which is tight and seeping transmission fluid. Is this going to be a costly fix?

OIL LEAK AROUND THE SPARKS PLUGS COULD BE LEAKING VALVE COVER GASKETS ALLOWING OIL TO SEEP BY GASKET FLOW DOWN AROUND SPARK PLUGS.TRANSMISSION LEAK IS NOT VERY EXPENSIVE LONG AS TORQUE CONVERTER SHAFT SEAL NOT LEAKING WHICH TRANSMISSION HAS TO DROPPED OUT TO REPLACE SHAFT SEAL.IF TRANSMISSION LEAK AROUND FRONT AXLE SEAL IT MAY COST A LITTLE.BUT PAN GASKET LEAK OR OIL COOLER LINES WONT COST TOO MUCH NOT HARD TO GET TO REPAIR.PHONE AROUND GET PRICE CHECKS.

Adding or changing transmission fluid for a 2000 VW Beetle. Can I do that or do I need to take it to a VW shop ?

Unless you have a VAG 1552 scan tool then yes and you wouldn't be asking this question. It measures the transmission's internal fluid temperature (expansion fo fluid due to heat) which determines the level of the fluid. Keep in mind this will be a good time to replace the transmission filter which is available as a part and not a kit. The pan gasket, an O-ring, the filler plug and it's security seal, I wish it was sold as kit. Don't forget the VW transmission fluid for the 01M auto gearbox part no. G 052 162 A2. I've used this parts and I know what I have and it works.

This needs a rating, thank you and good luck.

2001 vw beetle tdi diesel. How do I check the automatic transmission fluid? Also, my mechanic says he can't change transmission fluid or do a flush because there are no drain or fill plugs and no pan? What...

VW automatic transmissions require a special filling tool to fill the transmissions using gravity. They also never recommend a fluid or filter replacement unless a problem is evident. (a leak or shifting problem). They also use a special brown synthec oil that i believe is only available at VW. My advice is to go to a Volkswagen dealer. I'll still tell you how it works. To check the level the vehicle transmission must be cold (not driven at least 8-9 hrs). With a scanner plugged to check fluid temperature in the transmission. RFemove the red cap on the little tube. It's clipped. Once the red cap is removed the black cap can be pulled out. This is the fill tube. This is where the fluid is added using the fill tool. Start the car and remove the 5mm allen screw which looks like a drain. Inside this is a little tube that goes upwards like 3 cm in the pan. (when the oil heats up it expands and leaks out here) With the car running in park, if oil runs out of the pan hole before 35 deg. c there is too much. Let it drain. If no oil leaks at 35 deg. c it's because there is not enough and oil has to be added while the temperature is going up. At 35-40 deg. c oil should spill out ,reinstall the 5 mm allen with the seal, reinstall the filler plug and red cap lock. If the oil is over 26 deg. c before starting your better off waiting till it cools off to have time to add or let drain depending. Strange procedure but the right one.

Cannot find dipstick to check transmission fluid on 99 vw beetle. do '99 Passats need transmission fluid added to the engine? If so, how do I do this?

There is no "dipstick for the VW Beetle transmission". This is a dealer check/repair item. The unit is typically sealed, but can have a leak if the seal on top of the transmission fails. About a $700 repair. This happened on my 1998 VW New Beetle.

2001 VW Beetle manual transmission leak

Hi Cornate . It sounds like your rear main oil seal has gone . Not a cheap job . Judge how serious it is by topping up your oil level to the correct level and reset your trip counter . Check your oil level weekly and top up and work out how much oil is being used/lost (Per litre / miles) . Regards VW Audi tech
