Question about E-Machines eMachines Desktop PC

Output A:\GHOSTERR.TXT? I am on disc 2 and at 75% when I get this question and if I say no then the recovery stops and says its finished but locks up on the A drive when booting. If I say yes I get the message "cannot open GHOSTERR.TXT - insert diskette". What do I do, symantec no longer handles support calls for the e-machines.

Try cleaning the cd, if no luck; use a friends pc and burn a new copy of the restore cd.

Try going to a friends computer and getting on the internet and going to google.com. In the search box put "ghosterr.txt" and search. There are numerous finds about this problem.

I'm assuming that you formatted your drive because you were experiencing problems. I would suspect that you have some bad sectors on your hard drive. Those bad sectors may have been causing your initial problems as well.

Without replacing the drive, I would recommend downloading a copy of UltimateBootCD (link below). Burn and boot off of that CD and run Darik's Boot and Nuke under HDD. This will write zero's onto all sectors of your drive.

If you can identify the manufacturer of your drive, you can boot off the UBCD and run the manufacturer's diagnostic tools. These will typically include a surface scan which will check for bad sectors and prevent the drive from using them.

If you have a significant number of bad sectors, there may be an ongoing problem. After a while, the drive will become completely useless. If that is the case, you'll need to replace the drive.

Good luck!

It looks like either the laptop HDD has failed or has become dislodged. Remove the HDD coverplate and ensure the HDD is correctly seated and secure it.

As to the ghosterr.txt problem the biggest cause is a dirty/scratched disc.

I need to create recovery disks for my HP Pro Book 4310s in case I need to restore it back to factory settings in the future. I just got this computer and was I told I should get this done. I am running...

Hi.

Please follow the steps to create the recovery discs using the HP Recovery Manager.

Click Start>AllPrograms>Recovery Manager.
Select Recovery Manager. This will open Recovery Manager.
Click Advanced Options. If you are using a laptopand operating on battery power alone you must connect to anAC power outlet before you can go to the next step.
Select Recovery disc creation. Click Next. The Recovery Manager will begin creating the necessaryfiles. This may take a while, so be patient until the bar has reached 100%.
Read the table of requirements thatappears. Depending on the type of discs you use, more or less may beneeded; if you use ordinary CDs, Recovery Manager will require more compared tofewer discs if DVDs are used.
Insert your first blank disc, havingmade sure it is fully labeled, such as "Recovery Disc 01" or"Recovery Disc 1 of 2". The optical drive of your computerwill have automatically opened. If not, open manually. Close the optical driveand click Next.
Understand and confirm you want to gothrough with the operation using the type of disc you have inserted by clickingNext.
Wait while Recovery Manager now createsthe first disc. This may take 20-40 minutes as it collects the files, writes the files and verifies the files to disc.
Remove the disc and insert the nextafter the first has been finished after clicking Next. Continue the creation of discs according to thenecessary requirements, up until the last has finished creating files.

Click Next after removing the disc and then Finish to complete the session. Congratulations! You havejust made yourself a set of recovery discs.

Use the recovery discs to recover yourcomputer in case of system instability or failure.

Thanks!!!!!

Its a RAM issue. you should open your laptop and reinsert your RAM. If you cant do so then go to nearest service center and ask him to reinsert RAM. okay

Output a ghosterr.txt message when I use the Restore CD's

You can change the default abort file (ghosterror.txt) location and name by specifying the switch -afile=filename where filename contains the path and name of the error file you wish to create.

Example: ghost -afile=c:\errorfile.txt

Please try this switch and post your error file if you are successful.

I was trying to do a full system recovery

I HAVE A E-MACHINE. If you have any C/files they will be lost ... But go ahead and un-plug power for at least one-minute. reapply power and insert the 1st Restore disc and continue through all your discs. If it asks for administrator it will cue you to type in a NAME for the user and a password. Make sure you save the password somewhere. It sounds like one of the discs did not properly load and caused a failure.

Its worth a try. Lucky you have a e-machine. Other computers like Dell dont give you the restore discs and you have to pay for Windows XP or Vista. Or take it back where you bought it.

Continuing formatting trouble

Hi Shawn, It sounds as though your recovery disk has Norton Ghost incorporated into it, thus the call for the Ghosterr.txt file. Most recovery disks are just modified Windows installation CDs and if you boot to them they will immediately go into the Windows recovery which is what Sandrew was trying to walk you thorough. Having said that I?ve found a few other references to this type of issue and has usually been a result of CD read errors. - Try cleaning the recovery disk, if there are severe or numerous on it or if it is dirty that could be your problem. - If that doesn?t do it try cleaning your CD drive with a good commercial cleaner. - If that fails another option is trying a conventional Windows installation CD. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
