Try cleaning it first with a can of contact cleaner and let it dry.

Mower will not shut off

When the key is turned to the off position it grounds out the ignition coil to stop the spark plug from firing and also it interrupts the 12 volt signal to the Carburetor solenoid which will shut off the gas supply to the main jet. For both of these to not happen it would most likely be the key switch as it is the only thing they have in common .

Ignition acting funky

With many of these Tractors, as part of the safety B.S., much of the electronics run through the PTO switch. Power to the ignition runs through the PTO.

My craftsman 42" lawn tractor won't shut off.

when you turn off the key you are breaking the power circuit to the coil. If it keeps running then the coil is still getting power. Check for a wire touching the power wire before the switch that runs to the coil

When I turn the key on my JD 2305 tractor to start,it rolls the engine over, but when I let go of key it stalls and wont stay running.

You have the same M806808 fuel shut off solinoid as the 4000 series tractors. They use a timer/heater called a thermistor. This is common to your simptoms, I just dont see it for the 2305. Talk to your dealer, and ask him to look up a thermistor for your tractor.....Dont let him tell you have a fuel pump problem...Its a scam. Get back with me if they **** you around. The fuel shut off soleniod has three wires, you can check them for voltage. Just disconnect them and check voltage between the black and blue and the black and red. On the tractor side. You will have to crank the motor to start the timer circiut. after you start ( or just hit the key for 2 seconds) you should have voltage on the red ,during crank, and voltage on blue while the key is in the run position. If you do, the problem is in your soleniod. Remove it and do the same thing to confirm.

I have a John Deere R92 Tractor and the tractor will not shut off when you turn the key off. I have replaced the key switch, and it still does not shut off. Any help is appreciated.

Eric, I think this tractor has a kill switch that operates by connecting a hot lead to ground. Follow the two wires from the switch. If I am correct, then one of them won't go too far before it's connected to a stud on the tractor frame. This connection is probably corroded. I hope this helps. Good luck.

My mower wont shut off with key

Under the cover that covers the flywheel on the right hand side there is a connector that is likely unplugged, this grounds the coil when you turn off the key and there by shuts of the motor. If this is not the problem then you likely need a new ignition switch.

I cant shut off my lawn tractor with the key

I actually had the same problem with my tractor and it turned out to be that I had to run a second ground wire (ground to a separate point) that forces the coil to ground). My suggestion is to remove the flywheel cover and attach a wire (at a different point) to the coil and then start the tractor and when you go to shut it off. Turn the key and then just find a metal point on the tractor to touch the wire to and hopefully the tractor will shut off.
Good luck!

When I turn the key to shut the engine down it

I don't think the starter solenoid is involved here. T

There should be a fuel shut off solenoid on the bottom of the carburetor which shuts off fuel when the ignition is turned off -- this is a safety feature as well as protection from damaging backfiring.

This fuel shut off solenoid could be stuck open.

There is a switch under the seat which opens and closes the solenoid depending on whether the seat is occupied. This switch as well as the ignition switch control the solenoid.
